[Kotaku] SSBB Wii Disc Read Error - Page 4

a console is a console. not a media hub that the 360, and certainly the PS3 try, and fail (360 makes a fine example) to be.

The above quote, which i read on these forums, fits into the ongoing argument of which "console" is best (but personally, i wouldn't class either the 360 or PS3 as a console)

you buy a PS3 or 360, Microsoft or Sony have you by the balls. because of how complex either these systems are, failures are bound to happen. and what can the end user do?, NOTHING!. haha!.

Some people never learn ^.^. again, Wii FTW.

i cant wait to get my hands on a copy of SSBB

They built the system how they felt it should be and it turned out to be one of the best systems ever conceived. I love my 360, don't get me wrong but sometimes it is good to get away from all of the over the top graphical enhancements and get back to the basics. As long as a game is acceptable looking, if it is an over all enjoyable experience then it is a win in my book.
I want paper mario rendered at 90fps and in 3d.... yes i know that makes no sense

errr?? This is an isolated problem. And you realize that hardware not being able to "keep up" has absolutely nothing to do with reading dual layer discs..

The reading of dual-layer discs is part of the storage medium. If they have issues from a little dust on the lense they are going to have trouble with triple layer which if a game like SSB is having issues fitting i see this as being a major issue. I think the legend of zelda had to use multi-disc didn't it?

All pieces of technology has their problems. I'm sure this has happened before, especially on the Wii, just people hear about it because they aren't able to play one of the most anticipated games FOR their Wii.

Like i said, my point is its storage medium is a serious problem it itself. This is just some dusty room issue, but the problem itself lies within a game like SSB is having to use dual layer that means the discs are going to probably need triple-layer if you get games like on the 360 and PS3 (or PC.) What then happens?

This kind of stinks but as long as the affected people get a fixed/replacement for free, not a big deal.

Wow someone hates Microsoft and Sony...and loves Nintendo!

I'm pretty sure the PS3 has just as good of a failure rate as the Wii. MS replaced all of the RRoD 360s for free, so I wouldn't exactly say that they "have us by the balls".

Console is usually short for entertainment console. Media is by all means a form of entertainment, and therefore the media "hubs" have a distinct advantage, at least in the future when blu-ray becomes standard. And to my knowledge, the PS3 has the best failure rates.

See? I can nit-pick too.

Licht is absolutely 100% correct about the disks. And yes, quality of parts used is a significant factor in the reading of disks. My first Ps2 read all my games just fine until i got GTA:SA. After that, since the disc was so full, it had trouble reading the game and would often stop reading it altogether. It was only a week or two before the next game stopped playing, and about a month later they had all stopped playing. I sent it back, they replaced the lazer, or maybe even the whole system (they didn't tell me directly). Never had a problem since.

The wii could, and in my educated guess, is faulting because bigger games requiring "more horsepower" (my official edit would be "quality parts") are finally getting to it. I wouldn't expect this problem to happen with any other console, at least not for the same reasons.

There is no advantage if the said consoles perform to a standard which is less than a faithful P.C, which is capable of being the best hub of them all. therefore making both of those unstable "consoles" useless.

I do partly agree with what you say, but both the 360 and certainly PS3 are just ahead of thier time. hence all the problems they have.

I don't hate microsoft or sony, just thier systems

Too many times ive seen a PS3 randomly lock up. not once have i experienced this on the Wii. or any other unwanted behavior
