DFI Expert SLI mod?

Thread Starter
Hello all,
I am about to enter into SLI goodness, but am worried about my NB fan & shroud. When I install my second card (when it gets here) it will hit the NB cooler. When i turn off the fan on the NB i only see a 1-2 degree increase, can i remove the fan & shroud? I have an antec 900, and the airflow is good throughout.
If not can the shroud be "modded" so the card will fit?
Thanks

It will touch the NB cooler but the fan should still spin. I wouldn't remove it...

I personally wouldn't recommend taking the chipset cooler off, even if you noticed just a small increase during your test turning the fan off. It still had a heatsink sitting over the chip itself, which aids in heat dissipation; taking the chipset cooler assembly off entirely will increase the temperatures much more than just the 1-2 degrees C that you saw, for sure, and will kill the motherboard.

The heatsink is there to increase the surface area of the hot surface (by being in contact with the chip); the bigger the surface area, the more efficient and more effective air cooling becomes. Adding a fan to the whole lot further improves the cooling properties.

The nForce4 SLI chipset is known as a very hot chipset; if it didn't need a cooling system (active or passive), none of the nForce4 SLI motherboards would have ever been released with one.

Solution to your problem? Perhaps a low-rise NB cooler, like one from this page. This dealer also provides a plethora of options that are hopefully suitable for you.

Other options here and here. Good luck!

If you can augment airflow to a heatsink sitting on the chipset some other way (such as directing a ghetto-rigged fan aimed right at that heatsink, or using an Antec Spot-Cool maybe), that would definitely help things. But cooling the chipset purely passively (sans fan completely) that's not a heatpipe-cooler, a la the A8N32-SLI Deluxe or an AN8-32X? I don't recommend it myself.

I suggest a Thermalright Hr-05 Sli, i have tried these is the past with difficult to cool southbridges/northbridges and the work great!, an 80mm fan can also be added to it...
