7800gt on 42" LCD HDTV

Thread Starter

About a month ago, I got a new

for my living room. I also threw together a computer from spare parts to put in the room (7800gt video card), and use the TV as a monitor. So far, I love it, except for one thing: when I set it to the TV's native resolution of 1920 X 1080, the text becomes so muddled, it's barely legible. And it's not because it's so small, I actually set the dpi to 200%, to the text is plenty big. It's just that the white behind the text (and only behind the text) changes to off-white almost, and the color difference is very hard on the eyes. I hope that makes some kind of sense, and someone knows what I'm talking about. Right now, I'm running at 1280 x 800, and I just want some more desktop space, especially using a 42" monitor.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure I'm using all the latest drivers. Anyone have any tips?

(edit: not sure whats up with the tv link, can't get it to stop double-posting the link text)

there's a cleartype option somewhere in windows that should help alot but this might not be the exact problem you are referring to. I had a similar problem w/ a build for a friend that used a 37" Westinghouse...

check what you have the refresh rate set to in adapter properties, this is a common cause of blurred text. Also are you connected via vga/dvi etc?

My 2 cents,

Try "Clear-type fonts". Its a setting somewhere in display properties. It improves letter visibility on LCD screens.

Your 7800Gt might not be able to handle a 42" at that high of a resolution.

enabled cleartype, and it helped a bit. still a little blurry around the edges though. And I'm connected via a DVI to HDMI cable. I have another 7800gt somewhere around here. would it help to run them SLI? think that might help run a 42"? Thanks for all the input guys, I really appreciate it

Sli certainly wont do any harm, but have you checked the refresh rate set in the monitor properties?

60hz. is that what it should be at? i dont know too much about refresh rates
post #8 of 8
try experimenting with your refresh rate, perhaps 70/72/75 hz, you'll normally see an improvement.
