[Toms' Hardware] "PCs Are Good For Anything, Just Not Games" - Page 5

I've seen some noticeable improvements from Futureshop in the last year, I've seen an 8800GT going for $270 there, and that was back when $260 was the retail price and TigerDirect was still selling it for $380. None of their prebuilt computers use Intel graphics either, they are all either 8500GTs or 2600pros. I even saw a high end model with a 8800GTS 640 in it!

The prices aren't that bad either. Around christmas time they were selling a complete setup that included a Q6600, 4GB ram, a 500gb HDD, 22" lcd, kb, mouse, and a 2600XT for $1000. The same setup from Newegg actually costs more!

They install COD4 on it and expect to fly. It's their fault.

PC all the way.

Well, everybody has pretty much touched base in one form or another on all the problems. I think it was a decent interview though.

Remember the last time to when you ( if you're old enough ) had to pay someone else to make a decision or repair for you, or maybe you bought a new unit instead of repairing the old one. Now imagine you post what you did in some forum. I'm sure someone somewhere would come out the woodworks just like you did and say it's your fault you didn't know some piece of intel that isn't widely know.

Put yourself in someone elses' shoes.
This view is what's wrong with us....people don't know the value of RESEARCH!!

Let me ask you...before you make ANY sizable purchase, i'm assuming you put some thought and research into your choice, correct? Well same goes for this situation, if the customer wanted to play games on their computer, they should have researched about what kind of hardware is needed to accomplish that.

What are you expecting major corporations to do? Hold our hand 24/7 so no one makes a bad purchase?

COD4 was surprisingly playable with everything turned down and updated drivers on my notebook (1.8GHz C2D, Intel X3100).

That doesnt mean you do not know what you are doing with a PC. I consider myself someone who knows what they are doing and I have easily run into problems when trying to fire up a game...maybe not a problem with the actual game but with other things such as drivers or other pieces of software or even hardware...but thats very rare.

Like I said there are a few more factors when it comes to PC gaming than console. I love PC gaming but I also love console gaming for the fact you can shove your game in and off you go. We could sit here and discuss the pro's and cons all day but there will never be a perfect system.
You definitely have me on the situation of an actual problem arising, where a console problem (way less likely in the first place) will be fixed much faster than a problem with a PC game, no manual patching needed, and the developer knows that the problem has to do with only one generic set of hardware. If the problem had to do with different flavors of the same system (for hypothetical example, in-game crash on non-Falcon 360's), then the problem would only happen in that one specific flavor and could be pinpointed.

Good point with device drivers as well. I've never really had problems with them so they didn't come to mind.

PC = Personal Computer = You must PERSONALIZE it!!! for it to be a real PC. Buying one off the shelf is like buying a console anyway so why bother.
Well Intels Graphics suck and i belive they will continue to suck if their "if you want it, pony up" attitude continues. Though with AMDs new IGP being about as powerful as a 7900 it makes me wonder.

Though with consoles being cheaper than PCs:

PC: $1300
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550
ABIT IP35-E
G.SKILL 2GB
Seagate 250GB
Acer 20" widescreen
HIS HD 3870
CORSAIR 550W
COOLER MASTER Centurion 541
LG 20X DVD±R
ALTEC LANSING Speakers
Logitech Mouse and Keyboard
Vista 64bit Home premium
Crysis
Sins of a solar empire
CoD4
UT3

X360 : $1500
Microsoft Xbox 360 Deluxe
Westinghouse Silver & Black 37" 16:9 8ms 1080p
Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller
Microsoft Xbox 360 HDMI AV Cable
Microsoft Xbox Live Gold 12 Month Subscription Card
Microsoft Xbox 360 Play and Charge Kit
Mass effect
Call of dudy 4
Burnout paridise
Assassins creed

Respectfully if you want to play the 360 in all its glory it ends up costing more than a mid-range gaming rig. If you want to play it on a regular TV in half-assed 480p be my guest, but i wont.

please stop quoting consoles as being a "mere $350" it only costs $350 if you want a white box to keep you company while you dont play any games, play with friends, or enjoy high-def goodness.

Pc gaming isnt popular because the technology isnt cheap enough for an average person to buy, integrated graphics are good for media and business not gaming obviously, i do think pc will eventually take over and consoles will be gone but that wont happen for at least another 5-10 years just because its cheaper to buy a console right now
