Old IDE HDD won't read on my new PC.

Hi, on my old PC I had a charming 80GB Maxtor which I was hoping to connect up to my new PC to get off my music and game saves etc. The thing is it won't recognise the disk in windows, only in BIOS. I've tried it set to master and slave etc but I don't seem to get any luck. Also I have tried it on a mate's computer and same results. In BIOS, not in windows.

I've tried various BIOS configurations but can't seem to get anywhere. Anyone able to offer any help?

New HDD is a 250gb SATA-II btw, don't know if that helps.

Have you tried any third party drive management software to see if they can find it? Your partitions might be messed up and windows is refusing to mess with it.

Other than that, I don't know what could be wrong. How long has the drive been out of the old computer? It could have been jarred when it was migrating...

Well if he tried it on his mate's rig, then it shows that it is most likely something wrong with the drive.

Sorry, went out. Thanks for the replies.

I'll have a look on my BIOS and report back. BTW what 3rd party software would you recommend?

It wasn't my old system HDD, it was just a media drive.

I saw you said you tried Master/Slave... did you also try "Cable Select"?

Also, in the friend's computer, was he also using a SATA drive, or did he have an IDE master?

BTW.. when you say that "Windows doesn't see it", did you notice this from Windows Explorer... or did you go into the Drive Management tab (from the Administrative Tools in the Control Panel) to see if the drive was listed at all?

If you think that the drive itself is bad, then I'd recommend going out to the Seagate site (since they bought out Maxtor) and downloading their "SeaTools" to see if the drive itself is having any issues that are causing this problem.

Here is a link to their download page: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/sup...oads/seatools/

Wow cheers dude.

I don't think I've tried cable select. I'm guessing that's "CS enabled" on the HDD then?

The card is not in the PC at the moment. I will try this in a bit and report back. The IDE cable I was using is currently being used by my DVD drive so I'm bouncing between both drives as my mobo only has 1 IDE. The cable definitely works!

Had the same problem with my old WD 40GB, so I went on ebay and got one of those cheap USB 2.0 enclosures and threw it in there and copied my music to my new drive. Worked like a charm. More of a workaround than a fix.

If the old HDD is not formated it will not show up under Windows. I just had the same problem with a new HDD. Although if you have stuff saved on it, it must be formated.

Also I know with most new MoBo's you do not need a jumper on the HDD at all, try taking the jumper off and see what happens!
