which would you prefer?

Thread Starter 
A higher core clock speed or a higher shader clock speed? I can get my core speed on the video card to 750mhz stable with a 1720mhz shader clock but i can also get a 1800mhz shader clock speed at stock 675mhz core. Should i go with the higher core speed or higher shader speed? which would benifit me more in gaming?

I'd go with a higher shader clock as that is what processes all of the fancy effects in games. A core of 675 is still rockin'. I'd say run 3DMark 06 with each setup and compare your scores. You could post the results on here as well as I'm interested to see how much it would change on the 9600GT.

I would posit the notion that 3dMark06 is not the appropriate measuring device for your situation, due to your 754 single core. I doubt you'll see much if any difference from *any* overclocking on that card with that CPU.

What you'd need is something that's relatively tough on the graphics card, and easy on the processor. Something like, oh, say, the FEAR built-in benchmark? Try running it all high, 4xAA, 16AF, 1680x1050, with the different settings.

My guess is that you'll find the higher core speed to be more beneficial because the percentage increase in your core is much greater than the one in your shaders, at least in the two scenarios you describe.
