How much does cache affect performance?

I have a second 250gb drive coming soon for RAID, however the two drives will have only 8mb of cache.. How much of a difference would it make if they both had 16mb of cache?

a big difference. that is where the speed is at. i went from a 8mb cache driver to my dual 16mb cache drives and i noticed a huge decrease in boot time and transfering files time.

Cache mainly makes a difference on accessing files that get used over and over. The initial read of data gets buffered through the cache and if you need that same data again, it goes to the cache memory not the platters, hence the speedup. There are also "read ahead" algorithms that "guess" what data you will want next based on past file access (hence the speedup in killa's case), and that data also gets dumped in cache. Will the common user notice a speed up? Maybe. Maybe not. Most of the speedup I personally have seen is in the access of large data files and media applications. Databases also benefit from the larger cache due to indexing and searches.

YMMV
