Stupid Case Fan Question

Thread Starter

So that's my case. I was thinking about adding an 80mm fan under the big 140mm exhaust, right in front of those holes. If I did this, would I just make the 80mm an exhaust also? The only intake I have is in the very front of the case, so I don't know if this will be a problem?

Front should be intake, side should be intake, rear and/or top should be exhaust.

There's no top, and I don't plan on modding the case. Why would I make the 80mm side one intake if there is an exhaust right on top of it?

Exactly. This is what it should be in theory.

The only problem is that you'll then only have one exhaust fan. Which is an issue with cases like yours. Imo there should always be two exhaust fans at the rear of a case. Anyway, if you're really worried about that, I'd recommend you make the 140mm fan exhaust, the 80mm fan intake (to cool your gfx card) and, preferably, have a cpu hsf that blows in the direction of your 120mm exhaust fan.

The 140mm fan IS exhaust. As for throwing air back there, should I put the 80mm I'm about to add on somewhere in the case just to throw the air back there? As for cooling my video card, I have the PCI-slot Vantec Fan Card which blows about 25cfm

Sucking hot air out of a case isn't that important in cooling it down, especially if you have a vent on the side, like in your case (no pun intended). A side mounted fan should always, in theory, bring cool air into your case and are commonly used to blow cool air onto your graphics card.

The more cool air you can get into your case the better, even if you're left with just one exhaust fan. Hot air would escape via the vent anyway.

Alright, so I need to get everything as intake except the rear fan? I'm gonna add another 80mm right under the 140mm and also make that intake, as I know the 140mm isn't as good as it could be.

Sounds good. Make sure to record your temps before and after the change to see if the different orientation of the fans makes any significant difference (which I assume it would).

Since the only intake fan is in the front, would removing the bottom HDD cage help with how much air it's pulling in? The only HDs I have are 5.25" so I can take out the bottom one if it's gonna improve the airflow.
