Oh wow. That whole plan just sounds awesome.

Love the gas strut on the lid. That is going to be way too cool. The heavy duty feel of that is going to be perfect for this thing.

Where are you gonna get your struts? McMaster Carr has them, but they are kinda costly.

Did you use a Formula to figure the lbs of pressure, slide, and overall length?

Shhhhhh... don't tell anyone, but I'll be paying a visit to the local AutoZone when I'm ready for them ... As far as the throw, I think you can get them with a lock-out, so they are adjustable.
lbs of pressure??? I don't need no stinking pounds of pressure ... If it flies open, the quicker I can get inside right?

But in all seriousness, I'm far from getting exactly to that point, but just wanted to expose the idea. The catch is going to be the tricky part. I want something simple, but don't think that is going to be the solution.. I was looking at some servos from a CDRom drive, but that wouldn't work(or would it?)

The Servos would probably not have enough initial torque to start the process of lifting.... (?) Maybe though, because it just needs a gentle nudge to start the extending process.

The calculation is: F= (w) (Y) / (z) (N)

F = Force in lbs
W = Weight (total mass) to be moved
Y = Distance from fixed mounting point to the center of the object
Z = Distance from hinge point to moving mounting point
N = Number of struts to be used.

The servos would be for the retainer latch (whatever that may be).

Are you an engineer by trade Syrillian?

To be honest, I don't want to over complicate the installation of these. I'm looking at a couple similar to what you'd use for a car hood or a hatchback. I should be free to mount it anywhere at any depth that it needs. I've seen a couple sites that will actually build one special for you as well, but that's just going a little too far imho

I'll surely take into consideration the formula because I looked at that on the mcmaster-carr site. If this thing starts looking too professional, I'll get one that matches the top utilizing the formula though lol

Thanks for the input bro!!!!

You think Jesse James uses that formula on Monster Garage? Get in the Zone...AUTO ZONE

lol

My favorite part is watching the guys struggle with an actuator set up and then Jesse kind of pushes them aside and whacks a coupla pieces of metal and zaps them together and it works the first time...

EDIT:

Here's my "Shadetree-Way" of strut-figuring

measure the side you plan to mount a strut. An inch less than that is your closed distance roughly.

Open the lid and measure from the hinge side less 1/2" to the front edge of the lid (less a 1/2") at max opening and that diagonal is your open length. Feel the weight of the lid in your hand as it is almost closed. Guesstimate what that is and double it...that's your desired lifting force.

If you are lucky enough to be able to handle and inspect the strut you can check all this easily. Otherwise you need to use whatever table is provided by the catalog. I get mine from West marine...they have different shaped ball end brackets for being able to locate the ends according to your surface.

The force from a gas strut is not linear like an actuator...it's very weak when fully compressed and strongest in the middle of it's expansion stroke...like a compound bow.

A horizontal lid is heaviest just as it is opening and lightest when vertical to the earth. Almost the exact opposite of what the strut is going to give you...but for a light weight lid this is ideal...because you do not want a great force upward our outward on the latch.

You might want to use a touch latch.

Heh!

Some people just have "The Force". ...the rest of us have to resort to formulae

I know this Cat from Oklahoma.... A tru Okie! Barely made it through High School... but he gets it right every time....EVERY time. He is amazing.
