want 4gigs of ram, (4x1Gb) or (2x2gb)

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
I currently have 2gb of memory (2x1gb) and i would like to upgrade to 4gb so i have more headroom. I realize w/ XP 32bit i will not utilize the full 4gb but more is always better than less. Would it be better to get 4 sticks of 1gb or 2 sticks of 2gb. Ill prob run them at stock speed or w/ a mild OC. It would be cheaper to buy 4 sticks at 1gb.

That's tough man... I personally say 2x2, since it leaves room for upgrades in the future, but that could be a while. I don't see anything wrong with 4x1, could give a nice OC. Maybe just buy 2 more sticks of what you got.

2x2 will yeild better overclocking since its less strain on the memory controller powering only 2 DIMMS vs 4

Get the 2x2 kit, upgradable, More OC, just better in general

For you thats a hard decision, when I built this I went 2x2 because it left me able to upgrade. For you you will have to decide. If you think you will use the same ram for about 3 years, go 2x2, if not I'd say just go with 2x1 and up the voltage to them like .1 and they will overclock just as well.

2GB ram modules are not as fast as 1GB modules. Even at higher OC's they have much lower transfer rates.

Unlike what everyone else has already said ....
Why not get the 2x2 kit that matches your 2x1 kit that you already have?! It's on sale for only $84 after $40 MIR.
Then you get the best of both worlds;
You're not tossing out the sticks you currently have, and you can "survive" on only 6GB until you're ready to buy your second set of 2x2s!
(yes, it will put more stress than just the 2x2s solo; but, not much more; and no more than 4x1s)
Or better yet; get the next step up (Cas4) of the same Twin2X style 2x2 kit;
Then you'll have the additional fun (and learning) of tinkering
** Hmmm, what do I like better 4GB (2x2 Cas4) or
6GB (2x2 Cas4 + 2x1 Cas5) running at cas5 or
Hmm can I tweak my cas5 2x1s up to match the Cas4 2x2s..?.....?**
Brilliant
(and before everyone jumps in; Yes you can mix memory module sizes as long as each channel contains the same size total)

Cheers
[edit: just wanted to add; yes I realize he's on XP32bit, -but everybodys gonna hafta switch to x64 at some point-
