Why not get the 2x2

Then you get the best of both worlds;
You're not tossing out the sticks you currently have, and you can "survive" on only 6GB
until you're ready to buy your second set of 2x2s!
(yes, it will put more stress than just the 2x2s solo; but, not much more; and no more than 4x1s)
Or better yet; get the next step up (Cas4)
of the same Twin2X style 2x2 kit;
Then you'll have the additional fun (and learning) of tinkering
** Hmmm, what do I like better 4GB (2x2 Cas4) or
6GB (2x2 Cas4 + 2x1 Cas5) running at cas5 or
Hmm can I tweak my cas5 2x1s up to match the Cas4 2x2s..?.....?**

; Yes you can mix memory module sizes
as long as each channel contains the same size total
[edit: just wanted to add; yes I realize he's on XP32bit, -but everybodys gonna hafta switch to x64 at some point-
