Interview - We got a chance to sit down with one of the sparkling celebrities of the IT industry during the the Game Developers Conference 2008: Tim Sweeney is founder and CEO of Epic Games, creator of the famous Unreal game engines.

TG Daily editor Theo Valich spoke with Sweeney about the future of the PC as a game platform, the role of the next-generation of game consoles, the next Unreal engine as well as the future of Epic.

We have known Sweeney for several years and are always looking forward to his view on the state of the gaming industry, which he is not afraid to discuss openly. In this first part of our three-part interview, Sweeney takes on the PC, which he believes is in trouble and can’t keep up with game consoles, mistakes in Windows Vista and the integrated graphics dilemma.

Well, i can kinda see how this makes sense. When the xbox 360 came out, The Pentium D line was still new... And the video card in it, was leaps and bounds better than what was available at the time.

Same thing for the PS3. The cell cpu is still crazy fast compared to a PC, be it a different architecture...

I can see the next gen systems being that same almost full step ahead of the game in gaming preformance.

The main thing that PC's have over consoles, is the fact you can customize the hardware to fir your spending habits. With a console, you have few choices with what you get.

Game development is also one step ahead on consoles. With the consoles, the game developers know exactly what hardware they have to use, and can optimize the code very specifically to run better on a console, over a PC...

Microsoft should get wise, and release a form of windows that is made to run on the 360.

This really does concern me...admittedly Epic is a bit pessimistic but theres a few things I'm sad about:

1.) There's way too many choices in hardware, the more choices the harder it is for the devs to code for in a timely manner (This was made obvious even with the PS3 given its different architecture)

2.) Consoles will always be cheaper (By a hair) than PCs...given that $300 can give you a good core system whereas $300 will give you a mobo and maybe a processor...sad but true

3.) Most games are made for mindless masses... Halo3/CoD4/GTA/Frontlines/ETC...

I think the PCs may hold the market for RTS's and MMO's but I can see these games penetrating the console world entirely.

Can I blame the game devs for picking consoles? Not at all, given that Nvidia/ATI and Intel/AMD keep doing the run around on sideway movements and no advancements in technology.

Can't imagine how frustrating it is for Devs
