Some questions about keyboard modding

Thread Starter
Hey people!
I have thought about modding my keyboard a bit.
I wanna put some blue LEDS in it, so they give a nice effect to my keyboard in the dark.
So i have some questions - Can i get enough power from the keyboard connection cable for like 40 leds ( maybe less/more lol )?
Will the keyboard even function correctly, if i take power from the cable? Can the modded keyboard kill my computer?

Ill get some old keyboards from my friend, what i can use to test my modding skills.

i think it's possible, but i definitely wouldn't try 40. i would try something more reasonable like 3 to 5. you're looking for more of a glow right? not to improve readability?

Logitech internet 350 keyboard - on a lable under the keyboard. Thats the keyboard what im going to mod, if the test keyboards will survive.
All keyboards are PS/2.
There is also written Volts:5V===AMPS: 50mA under my keyboard.
Is this the voltage and ampers from the cable? I don't have a voltmeter at the moment.

And still, i would like to know can the modded keyboard kill my computer ( like motherboard )?

Also how many leds should be enough?

i think this is the power from the cable, 5 volts seems about right. like i said be moderate with the leds. you don't need a lot, and i wouldn't recommend a lot. maybe 4-5 max. i would definitely recommend a voltmeter too see whats the 5v and whats the GND. as far as killing you computer is concerned, you should be okay if u do it correctly, but i think damage is possible if u do it incorrectly. the damage can range anywhere from just ps/2 port(s) not working to extra stuff like usb ports, and onboard sound not working. i would assume those things can go wrong since they are all handled by the south bridge. please correct me if im wrong, someone, these are just my assumptions.

Have you ever ehard of that El Wire stuff? That's ideal for lighting up your under keys bit on the keybaord..

Edit - have This. I've seen a few mods done on KB's using this stuff, looks great.

I've never done anything like this, but I would recommend wire the led's separatly from the keyboard...get some resistors and a usb cable, solder the resistors beween the leds and the usb cable, heat shrink cable to keyboard cable, plug in usb...

that's not very specific, but I don't know how much power led's use. I tore apart a broken led fan, and used the led's while they were still wired for the fan for a while. They each had a resistor, and the little circular board I ripped the moter off pluged into the psu. If that wasn't a good discription i can post a pic of what I'm talking about.
