Strange Problem I can't figure out

Thread Starter
Alright I have a problem that I cannot seem to troubleshoot. 2 days ago my computer was working perfectly fine. My room is incredibly dusty so I went and bought an air purifier that night. Next morning (air purifier running all night) the computer randomly starts shutting off. So I reset the CMOS and everything was fine for awhile. Now my computer turns on just fine, but USB ports are acting crazy. My mouse and keyboard won't work, but my external HD and USB mic will. So I tried plugging the keyboard/mouse in those ports but they still won't work, only the mic and HD will. I tried using another keyboard/mouse and even those won't work. Also, now when I shut my PC down the light on the external HD and USB mic stay on when they should be shutting off. Is my motherboard going bonkers? None of this started until I brought in the air purifier, which is an Ionizer as well. Could this have done it? Please help me out guys

Hmm... To be honest random shut off's are USUALLY connected with the power supply. Do you have any spare components around for testing?

Unfortunately I really don't. The shutoffs are no longer an issue anymore. Just the USBs and now the computer thinks it's finding new PCI hardware when it boots up into windows, but I have 0 PCI cards.

I would try flashing the BIOS to a new one, but if you are at the latest, just flash to a lower one, and re-flash to the updated one. If that doesn't work, let us know.

Also, you may want to reinstall USB drivers for your mobo. I am guessing it is a coincidence with the air purifier, unless it is on the same circuit as the PC and, for whatever reason, it is drawing power away from the PSU.

Hmm I will try to see if I can reinstall the USB drivers. The main problem is that I have no way to input any information in the computer. The Keyboard won't even work with a PS2 adapter. None of my keyboards will.

I could see the PSU causing the random shutdowns but not the USB problem. Even USB keyboards with drivers, like the Reclusa, will work just fine without them installed. Will the keyboard let you move around within the BIOS? If it will, then the OS might be at fault. If it doesn't, you have a BIOS/motherboard issue.

The keyboard will not work on USB or PS2 in the bios. It's like the computer powers everything else on, but not they keyboard/mouse. It's just strange that only the USB mic and HD work and the keyboard/mouse will not even when plugged into the working USB ports. It makes me think that I need to send in my motherboard. Anyone know about MSI's RMA procedure? I'm hoping it won't take too long.

Just reinstall the chipset drivers.

Won't I need a keyboard or something though to install them?
