Help with new rig? :( lockups/crashes

Hi all

So I've just 2 weeks ago built this system in my sig, and I am having a few problems with it that I hoped you guys might be able to help me with. (I'm not sure if I posted this in the right section 'coz I couldn't see anything about help & support etc... so mods move pls )

I'll start with the main problem first.....

So when I'm playing a game (and this is any game, CoD4, BF2, CS:S, R6:V, LFS.... even Google Earth??), my system sometimes experiences lockups and crashes. With the lockups, they may occur at any time, and just come out of nowhere, leaving me staring at a motionless screen of the last thing which was on it, but the sound usually continues as normal. During these lockups there is absolutely nothing I can do but wait until the screen goes black while the graphics cards seem to reinitialize themselves about 10-20 seconds after the lockup (I'm not saying that these are what's causing the lockups because I have no idea).

Sometimes with the lockups though, the sound may continue as normal but the screen will just stay frozen until I reset the PC. But when I recover from a lockup, when I exit the game or tab out, there is a message in the system tray saying "Display driver has stopped working and was successfully recovered". It also gives me the name of a .dll file which I will post next time it happens.. though I'm suprised I haven't memorized the name of it by now.. the amount of times I've seen it...

The total crashes are similar - the game will be working perfectly normally one second and the next it just crashes out and reboots.

The system works perfectly stable when not running a game (lead me to think that this may be a DirectX problem, but the crashes happen in CoD1 too which I think is OpenGL).

System temps look fine, not sure what the stressed CPU temp is but it idles at 35ºC and I have pretty nice air cooling with the 900 and Tt Orb... and the GPU's according to CCC never above 60ºC. I have all the latest drivers installed for all hardware, but have not tried messing with BIOS version, mostly because I just bought the thing so I would assume the BIOS is fairly up-to-date. Can't be a power problem as I have 900W of the stuff, or a lack of memory as I have a completely unnecessary 8GB of this too.

I've looked around the net a bit and seen that there are quite a few people experiencing similar problems but always with some variations. Can anyone spot any conflicting hardware etc. that I might have overlooked....?

So far I am mostly thinking that it is a problem with my OS as I know there are a lot of things which do not yet support 64-bit Vista (even the f**cking MS Vista upgrade advisor...??!!?!), so I am probably going to borrow my mate's Home Premium 32-bit upgrade disc to see if that works any better.

So that's my main thing if anyone can be assed to read it I would really appreciate any help at all because this is driving me mad.....

The other thing is that I couldn't get my Raptors to work in RAID-0 which I wanted to install my games and OS on for fast loading. I configured it all in BIOS exactly as it said in the manual, trying both the installed AMD controller and also the Marvell controller. When I rebooted the system after setting it all up it just no longer detected the disks at all...?

So I would greatly appreciate any help with this too

Thanks in advance guys

- lew

EDIT: Also.. just forgot.. I was thinking it may have been a Crossfire problem - I have the 3870's in PCIe slots 1 and 3 due to the X-Fi needing a PCI slot which made fitting the second 3870 into PCIe 2 impossible. I'm not 100% sure if this is right.. also I only have one crossfire bridge between the cards, but browsing the net has put the thought into my mind that I might need 2. I thought the two bridge connectors on each card were just for CrossfireX.

Alot to take in

First and foremost, Welcome to OCN

Is your Phenom oc'd?
I would start by running 1 GFX at a time, rule out the cards as the problem.

Thanks for the replies

No, the Phenom is not overclocked - that's another problem, the system crashes completely with a high-pitched noise from the speakers when I try to make any change in AMD Overdrive but I'm not bothered about any overclocking until I get the system running properly. It's probably just a BIOS setting anyway.

About the graphics, I tried disabling crossfire once but got bored of the lower framerate and put it back on I'll try it again tonight, just disabling the crossfire and see if things are more stable.

have you tried different drivers?
is this a fresh install of the os?
have you tried with only one card in like grunion suggested?
will xfire work in slot 1 and 3 with out any problem(oked by manufactor?)

does this happen in safe mode?

Yes I've tried different drivers, yes it's a fresh install because it's a brand new system, yes I've tried with only one card (both of them seperately). And my cards are in slots 1 and 3 because that's the only place they'll go and still allow the PCI slot for my X-Fi.

Also, I've tried just using individual sticks of RAM, I still get the same problems :/

Haven't tried running any games in safe mode, I'll try that too.

I've seen on another forum that someone had a similar issue to me that was caused by GPU overheating because of the drivers not being able to control the fan speeds of the cards which then causes them to crash. I thought this might be relevant because come to think of it, I had never heard the fans speeding up during games. So, I installed RivaTuner to lock the fans at 100% (sounds like an Xbox ). Still had the same problems. Also, running GPU stress tests with GPU-Z open to monitor temps, neither card even hit 50C :/

I'm seriously thinking about buying XP 64 to see if it's stupid Vista causing the drivers not to work.

Anyway, thanks guys for replies so far, I'm still open to suggestions =]
