Overclocked CPU affects hard drive?

Thread Starter
It might just be my imagination but does an overclocked CPU affect the hard drive at all? Seems after I overclock my CPU significantly, my hard drive works more and a lot longer during/after boot-ups. It may just be my imagination as I am paying more attention to any sort of anaomaly during overclocking.

Is it theoretically possible?

What the FSB could be having an effect on is your PCIe frequency. At anything other than 100mhz you're asking for PCIe devices (including HDD controllers) to start acting funny. Is your PCI bus speed locked?

EDIT: Also check PCI frequency, it should be locked to 33.3mhz.

Yeah, PCIe bus is locked. Most settings are being controlled or if not needed are disabled. Only thing I left on auto were voltages other than CPU and ram voltages and ram timings/bus.

I noticed this before too on my older hitachi deskstar, as I OC'd to 3.2 when I booted up it was making quite a clunking racket. I had noticed it's performance had detirerated so I replaced it with a raptor X 150gb and it doesn't make the sounds.

An unstable overclock would have definite and noticeable effects on a hard drive, yes. OS/data corruption is most noticeable, I'd say...

kind of off topic but if i wanted to upgrade my hard drive and i only have and upgrade of vista(windows xp to windows vista) would i have to purchase a full version of vista rather than use the upgrade vista? my windows xp came with an old hp that i bought about 6 yrs ago... whats the process if i wanted to get a new hard drive?

No, you just transfer your files over. There are utilities out there to do this for you. Might not even have to reinstall Windows.

For instance if you get a WD retail drive then the included CD will transfer your whole OS from your old drive to your new one and you don't have to reinstall Windows.

In the event you DO have to reinstall Windows you are still within the terms of the EULA as long as the Vista upgrade is licensed to that computer (motherboard).
