Need help identifying my mobo

Thread Starter
I was hoping someone could help me identify what mobo I have. I recently bought a Dell Inspiron and would like to try and find what crappy mobo I have so I can make sure the video card I buy will be compatable with my system. Do I need to open up the case and find a model number or is there a program I can download that will tell me what my system has. My current video card is an Nvidia 8300 GS, so I'm hoping my mobo has a PCI express slot so I can upgrade to an 8800GT.

Thanks

Dell usually have a service tag that when you go to the site and click support. You put in the service tag number and it will take to the site with the info about your system. Or download cpu-z and it might tell you your board

Chances are, if it's a newer and somewhat high-end, it will have a PCI-e slot.

Newer computers also have the 6 pin PCI-E power connector, but my dell didn't...

but hmm
I agree -- go to Dell's website and go to Support, or try CPU-Z, or try and grab us a model # of your inspiron!

Dell's motherboards are purchased from Asus, which are built by FoxConn.

Thanks guys. CPU-Z showed I have an intel chipset model P35/G33/31, whatever that means. But the graphic interface does have a PCI-Express x16 connection, which means I should be able to run a 8800GT? I'm assuming I need a new PSU now too

download cpuz, and click on the mainboard tab. It will tell you your northbridge as well as south bridge, as well as your graphic interface. Basically, look at the bottom of the mainboard section and it will say if you have pcie or not.*ups sry, posted same time as he did*

check your spare psu connectors, if you have any with six pins,(3over3) then probably not, depending on the wattage...

Open up the side of your case and check your PSU, if it has at least 15amps on a +12v rail, you're fine.
