[vr-zone] Nvidia Prepares 55nm G92 Against AMD RV770

VR-Zone has learned that Nvidia is preparing to shrink G92 process technology from 65nm to 55nm to better compete against the upcoming RV770. DigiTimes today reported that RV770 will come along by end Q2 which is about the same timeframe as the 55nm G92. Most probably, you will see RV770 based mobile parts first as notebook makers have already received RV770 samples for testing. Right now, we are able to confirm some 55nm G92 mobile parts coming up to pit against the 55nm RV770. Most likely, there are 55nm G92 for desktop parts too as Nvidia in desperate needs to lower cost and improve yield in the next couple of months ahead to stay in competition. In any case the 55nm G92 even with higher clocks can't match up against RV770, Nvidia will have to push ahead the schedule of next generation GT200.

But the question is what are they going to call it? We've seen by the 8 series that nVidia simply refuses to make anymore *900/*950 cards, and if its G92 that means 256bit so the memory is going to be the same, so that won't work. Maybe they'll copy ATI and use a 9850/9870. Or maybe they'll come to their senses and call it what it should have been in the first place, the 8950 series.

How do they know about the performance of the RV770 and why aren't they sharing it?

These RV770 rumors seem all to familiar with the 2900XT rumors.

actually i prefer the dual gpu on one pcb than one mega gpu to do it all...the only problem is the size of the card . i mean, like processors, dual is better than single right? even tho it doesnt apply exactly the same.

nvidia will make the consumers wait a while though, b/c they are very concerned that the 55nm switch will just purely suck ass and no profit coming in. i say atleast late 2009 for this switch in shrink.

I disagree, personally I would prefer spending maybe 20% more for the next generation's powerful single gpu then MORE THAN twice as much for the previous generation's less powerful dual gpus.

3870X2 is $430 right now, CF 3870s are $380
9800GX2 is going to be around $600, SLI 8800GTS is $520.

But at least we know that unless ATI stuffs up big time, it will be faster than the 9x00GTX, thats only a OCed 8800GTS 512 fgs!
