If I upgrade, I might take off the IHS if I knew how about cutting it.
What were your temps idle and load after removal? Did you overclock yours?

At 3.5Ghz with 1.44v before IHS removal I got 86c Tcase (not 24/7 operation at that temp) and after IHS removal I got a jaw dropping 68c Tcase on load. Idles dropped 2c from 41c Tcase to 39c.

Spec for the E4500 is 73c Tcase.

Nice temp drop you just talked me into doing this on my 2180. Temps suck right now and a 2-10c drop would be nice. Waiting to get a Q6600 or similar then I will do it. Trust me a tread will be posted and the final results will be known.

Great work keep it up.

Nice guide and should help a lot of people daring enough to try it to reduce temps by a lot!

btw, grammar/spelling mistake

I have entertained a couple ways to get a soldered IHS off. Let me know what you think.

Suspend a condom full of alcohol and your processor in a pot of water. When the temperature of the water has reached 90degrees C, you should be able to remove the condom and processor and your IHS and processor should be seperated.

Or.

Just use a double boiler. You can fill the inner boiler with alcohol, or water. Being in contact with water for such a short period of time won't harm the processor as long as it's cleaned thoroughly with alcohol immediately afterwards.

I woulden't try the 2nd option in my opinion. The first option seems possible but I fear the PCB semi-melting or warping and severing several circuits by this method as it will also be at 90c for a period of time. I will try to do some searching reguarding that method later as I have to go for a bit right now.
