IHS Removals, How to do it, Should I do it, and the Facts! - Page 16

I am looking for Removal the IHS from my 2600K and hoping for lower Temps. Someone already done it with a soldered Sandy Brigde? And if someone done it, are the Temps realy better? Thank you
post #152 of 222
Can some one tell me if the IHS on Athlon 2 645 is solder or TIM? I would like to try and remove the IHS so I can try and push 4GHz! Thanks in advance!

You might want to add Ivy Bridge to this list.. Even though it's common knowledge that it's not soldered! smile.gif

Can anyone please confirm that the i7-3820 has the IHS soldered onto the core? If so, should I attempt to de-lid it for the sake of lowering my overclocked temps? I dont mind the risk, as long as the temp drops are worth it.

I'm pretty sure it's soldered. Just get a better cooler.

It is soldered yes.. The only current non-soldered CPU's are the Ivy Bridge line (3570k, 3570k etc 3xxx).

Don't know how helpful this is but you can confirm that a Celeron D 326 (Single Core Socket 775) is indeed glued + pasted, got two for free with the intention of practice for the removal of my 3570k and indeed they are! I can see the black glue squeezing out the edges, infact I'd be tempted to say it's the same as Ivy's glue. thumb.gif

If I save one (i'll probably do my i5 if this is the case) and i'll probably keep one as a backup with the board and some DDR2 RAM.

This is a very nice thread, though kind of forgotten...Still a good resource, someone should expand it.

Yes.. Simply because of the Ivies out there, and I bet Intel might even have the guts to do it again. I assume the OP isn't active anymore? tongue.gif

EDIT: Add Socket 478 P4's to the list of pasted CPU's. Non HT ones are also pasted as this 2GHz (no idea which one specifically unless anyone wants to help me?) was pasted. I'll add pics in a sec! It was so easy to do and wow. Defiantly going to do my 3570k in the next 2-3 weeks biggrin.gif

EDIT: Cracked the other P4 open wink.gif

EDIT: Alright.. Time to plan for this, I actually ruined a P4 by trying to scrape the black "Glue" off with the blade.. I just tried metho and that didn't remove it either, what do you guys use to remove Intels horrible glue and what TIM should I use? I'll get around to ordering that within the next couple of weeks. thumb.gif

EDIT: To save money incase it doesn't work.. I think I might use MX2 then get the other "Better" paste incase it doesn't succeed. We'll see how it goes, I wouldn't mind some gloves or something either as i almost cut myself a couple of times, I've got a PC to fall back onto for "School work" too. There's a cheap pre-de-lidded 3570k on eBay too.. Tempted to just get that and sell this for the money that i'd save (yes I'd profit from it)

the adhesive you can remove gently with fingernail and/or a plastic creditcard wink.gif

the best TIM to use is coollaboratory liquid pro or ultra, on the die that is,
pro is harder to remove, ultra is the follow up, the new pro so to speak, and is easier to remove,
pro has the highest w/mk, so gives the best results on the die, but saw some good results with ultra too..

on the IHS and/or base plate cooler any good tim will do thumb.gif
i personally used pro on all sides, die, underside ihs, on ihs, and base plate cooler,
very thin layers..very.. gave me 25+C temp drop smile.gif
