E8400 vs. Q6600 vs. Q9450 - Page 3

  • E8400 for gaming/light folding
  • Q6600 for Photoshop/audio or video editing/heavy folding
Don't get a Q9450 because they don't overclock in real life as well as they do on paper.

well, look at your budget and goals. I understand the E8400 can be oc'd in the 4Ghz range, which would beat a Q6600 in single threaded apps. The QX9659 can run in the high 4s or faster, depending on cooling, so really, your budget and goals are the key.

OCing is a bit like hotrodding cars. There is no 'goal' other than have cool stuff. Post temps, pics of lapped HSFs and CPUs (never to be seen again), cooling cases and cooling schemes, max stable OC (more like a drag strip number).

Budget comes into play. A $255 Q6600 G0, a TRUE, and some fans can do 3.6Ghz, with high real world throughput for less than $350. The E8400 may do a bit better on some, worse on other benchmarks. The QX9650, especially a well cooled one, can dust all comers.

Wait till April when the prices go down The q6700 should be around what the q6600 is costing now. And the q6600 will be cheaper and the new 45nm should be out.

Then i guess I'll have to wait a while. Aren't the Q9XXX coming about at the end of March?

The one thing no one ever brings up.
The 45nm chips OC like bats out of hell.
The 45nm quads should do the same, according to the trend, low multi or not.
Intel knows what it's doing, have faith.

I'm going to suggest you wait it out. The Q9450 is scheduled for the 15th.

They do, but they have low multipliers, so the FSB becomes the limitation unless you have an E8500 or QX9650 or 9750.

It depends on your motherboard. Ones that can handle high FSBs on a Quad should get the Q9450

Building a new pc this year, im on a budget and have saved for a while now.
Alltogether i have £1500 at tops hoping to save dosh where i can

Parts ive had in mind...
x48 Asus Rampage (cbf with ddr3)
2 Cards | 3870 IceQ3 Turbo 850/2250
4gb Dominator 1066
2 150gb WD raptors

However

Im really confused when it came to choosing a CPU
The hew wolfdales are out and i have been told they
reach around the 4s on air.

Q6600 has allways been an option with its high multiplyer
and good ocing results

Finally the q9450 is 45nm, clocked at 2,66 and
unfortunately has its voltage and multipyer capped.
8 is not bad, with the Rampage could i squeeze it out
into the 4ghz margin???

What should i do guys?
