New guy needs help

Hi all!

I'm Scott, a software engineer who's lost track of the hardware world for a few years.

First, here's my most direct question: what's wrong with my SpeedStep?

I have an Asus Maximus Formula, and if I manually enter a CPU multiplier, SpeedStep doesn't work anymore. I'd like to use a 400 FSB and 8 multiplier, but because I leave my box on 24/7, I'd like it to kick back when idle.

Second, any advice on my progress would be greatly appreciated. Here's the details of what I have...

Asus Maximus Formula
Q6600 G0
8GB TWIN2x4096 PC1066 Corsiar RAM
Stock cooling (CPU fan, 120mm exhaust fan)
Windows Vista 64 Ultimate

I've tried just about everything under the sun, but my two most stable "good performers" are the following:

### #1 ###
FSB: 333
North Bridge Strap: 333
DIMM: 533 (1066)
CPU Multiplier: Auto (9/6)

vCore: 1.2
vNorthBridge: 1.28
vDIMM: 2.1

North Bridge idles at 37c, tops at 42c.
CPU cores idle 35-37c, but top out RIGHT near 70 (yuck!) after a long workout.

### #2 ###
FSB: 400
North Bridge Strap: 400
DIMM: 533 (1066)
CPU Multiplier: 8

vCore: 1.3
vNorthBridge: 1.28
vDIMM: 2.1

North Bridge idles around 37c, tops at 48c.
CPU cores idle around 45c, but hit 70c in about 4 minutes of 100% load.

Any help appreciated!

Scott

Hey Scott and welcome !

Your cpu temps are of concern to me here..What cooling you running ?
Secondly this board loves big voltages. Those NB voltages are puny at the mo..
Im running 1.6V NB and 1.75 SB .This is at 9x 400 or 8x450.Stable.

I have dedicated fans running on the NB/SB and RAM in my water cooled case.
Ram also gets rather high Volts for this board to function well.

Again,Your cpu temps are of concern.Way too high for a Q6600 daily.Try getting those temps down.
Cheers.

Hi Kriss,

I know, 70 is too high. What about the NB? I can't seem to find average/max numbers for that.

My cooling is in my original post: stock, simple. 120mm exhaust, stock CPU fan, nothing more.

So about the voltages... I know that higher frequency required higher voltages, but isn't it also the case that higher voltage causes higher temps? That matches my testing.

Yea,NB gets a bit hot in there..As I said above,Ive got a dedicated fan on the NB all the time..

BTW,Stick up your system specs so we can see what your running..

I think before looking at any clocking here,I would upgrade all the cooling stuff..
Thermalright 120 something is highly regarded for cpu cooling..sorry,cannot remember the exact name now..

Yes,more Volts.more heat..Definitely..

Those NB temps are very low, or does that board have the WC blocks on it?

I agree that your cpu should definitely not be hitting 70c...

You shouldnt be overclocking with the stock heatsink on ,that will half your troubles.
Quads produce a decent amount of heat and if you are overclocking your heatsink better be up to the task.

That's not actually excessive voltage you are using there so its definitely the cooling causing the high temps.

EDIT:
I looked up and it is the WC NB...so those temps are fine.
The air cooled NB lke the Striker II get up to 90c!

Ok, I put my specs in, let's see if they show up with this post.

cognoscenti, how do you look up the NB data? I can't find it, but I'd like to know what is the normal and maximum temps for it.

As for cooling, I'll look into that... suggestions? I have no idea what I'm doing.

Oh, and the Formula SE is the one with the WC block, not the Formula.

About voltages... is it the case that one wants to run at the lowest possible voltage for a given speed, so as to minimize heat? I run 3.0Ghz because I can get the voltage down enough that it doesn't get too hot. But to go 3.2 or 3.6, I need to turn the voltage back up a notch or two, and it overheats.

Cheers :-)
