Blue Screen of Death! plz Help

Ok, heres the story. I have a box that im working on that had a copy of vista home premium installed, but it was so full of preinstalled crap, and im not a fan of vista anyway, I wanted to go ahead and get xp on it. So I pop in my Windows Xp sp2 disk that ive used probly 30 times with no problem, and right as it gets done loading the drivers it needs and it says starting windows, it bsod's, with this error message,
stop: 0x0000007B (C0x78D2524,0x00000034,0x00000000,0x00000000).

Ive read everything i could find on google on this problem and, checked everything on the microsoft homepage. Theres no way its a boot sector virus, and I tried installing other os's to no avail. the only OS i could load successfully were other copies of vista. I finally used killdisk to rewrite the whole HDD.. still no success.. Anyone who could shed any light on this problem will be GREATLY appreciated!

System specs are here:
Gateway GM5638E
core 2 quad q6600
nvidia GeForce 8500GT
400gb sata 2 hdd

PS: I ALWAYS build my machines, this is a perfect example of why, But i found this for 580 bucks at a liquidating comp USA!!

You are booting off the XP disc? Otherwise it will fail.

Also, make sure there isn't any hidden partitions.

Yes, I am booting off of the Xp CD. And it checks my hardware, and loades the drivers into RAM, Then says starting windows. Then it blue screens with the error message above. There was a hidden partition, The Vista restore partition, but I wiped the entire HDD clean with killdisk. So theres absolutely nothing on it.

What type of system are trying to install XP on. I used to work for dell, and saw a lot on system with vista, you have to go into the bios and change the sata mode from acpi to atapi.

Let me know of that works, but I'm pretty sure its a bios option. The new sata mode lets the system board work with the intel turbo cache.

It's a gateway.. And as much as I've messed around with the extremely limited bios, i can tell you i don't have that option.

Have you searched the gateway website for xp drivers for your system model. You probably need a sata driver.
