Newb- 3DMark 06 Score on New Rig

Thread Starter
Hello all,

This is my first post and hopefully it won't garner a ton of flames. I'm new to overclocking and still learning before I start fcking with my comp. I'm looking for help as I got 12 000 3D Marks with the new system and think I'm missing something/could benefit greatly with some seasoned suggestions. Everything is stock cooling.

CPU: Q6600
Mobo: P5K-E/Wifi
GPU: eVGA 8800GT 512MB
Mem: OCZ Dual Channel Gold XTC 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz
Running: Win XP 32 bit

I haven't fcked with anything yet, so please send some suggestions my way on where to start to make this decent setup run like it should.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the board! I think your fear of getting flamed will die quickly since we're all such nice helpful guys

With your setup, try setting your Q6600 to 3.0 by raising the FSB to 333 (1333QDR). This almost certainly can be accomplished on stock voltages. Be mindful of the memory divider so when you raise the FSB, you're not raising the RAM bus to something higher than your memory can handle.

3DMark06 is very CPU intensive and also multithreaded so 2.4 to 3.0 should yield a nice boost for you. For comparisons, the system in my sig pulls high 12K's in Vista x64

Let me phrase it this way then...what would you guys do to improve my results with stock cooling? Also, would I gain any benefit in overall performance from moving to XP 64?

Thanks for the quick responses!

I got 4k with mine so be happy =p 4k was because of certain issues I was having. 12K is fine all you should worry about is how it handles games not 3dmark.

This is my first tech forum, I've only even been active on bodybuilding forums so I don't have the expertise here to defend myself hahaha. Thanks for the help!

Agreed, but I figure that the more recommendations I get, the better it'll perform every which way.

Thanks again, keep the suggestions coming! (at work so I dont' get to give them a try till I get home).

Basically do what MNiceGuy said. OCing your vid card with RivaTuner would help too.

As far as XP64 goes, don't even think about it. It's beyond awful.

Thanks, that's another thing I was definitely wondering about. I'm researching his suggestion so that I understand completely what he means by

"Be mindful of the memory divider so when you raise the FSB, you're not raising the RAM bus to something higher than your memory can handle."
