Q6600 @ 3.0GHz advice needed

post #1 of 5
Thread Starter
Hello all, I am a newb here and at overclocking in general. I have a few questions about heat, memory and voltages. Any comments by you pros would be appreciated.

Here is the setup:
XFX 680i LT SLI w/P07 BIOS
Q6600
2x 1Gb Corsair XMS PC6400
Evga 8800 GT 512/G92 w/new BIOS and 169.44 beta Nvidia drivers.
Ultra 600w p/s
Coolmaster Case
Vista Premium 32Bit
All the latest patches, hotfixes and updates.

Cooling:
Masscool 8W553 (Basically a stock HS and fan)
3x 120mm Fans at 1200rpm +/- (Front in, Side in, Back out)
Stock HS and fans on the NB and SB
RAM has stock HS

O/C Settings:
CPU = 3.0GHz
FSB = 1333MHz
Clock = 9x (6-9 w/speedstep enabled)
RAM = 333MHz 5-5-5-15
FSB:RAM = 1:1
Vcore = 1.25v set, 1.21v w/droop
Mem = 1.90v
FSB = 1.40v
HT(SPP-MCP) = 1.20v
PCI-E = 1.25v
NForce = 1.50v

Temps (Speedfan calibrated and CoreTemp).
Idle:
Ambient 22
CPU 39 (Tjunction)
CPU 25 (Tcase)
System 32

Load (Prime95 12 hours w/all four cores maxed):
Ambient 22
CPU 68 (Tj)
CPU 60 (Tc)
System 34

Graphics card (Not O/C'ed, runs at 50 idle, 70-75 playing crysis for 2 hours.)

Ok now my questions.

1. Are these temperatures and voltages safe?

2. If I try to tighten the RAM timings will increasing mem voltage help with stability?

3. Generally speaking, would a mild O/C on the graphics card, say 625/1000/1500, contribute much heat to the ambient temp?

I'm new to Intel OC'ing (< 1 month on current setup), but it doesn't seem to have a steep learning curve. In what I've seen with my equip., your voltages are low, but your load temps are high probably due to your stock hsf. If you know your VID from Coretemp, that should give you an idea about how much headroom you might have with your voltage. For your ram, I'd recommend running it within its specs and I'm not familiar with the GT, but those clocks don't sound extreme so I doubt that they'd increase your ambients.

EDIT: And welcome to OCN!

Welcome to OCN.Net!

1. Temps are fine, but i recommend to get an aftermarket cooler like Tuniq Tower or Thermalright Ultra Extreme.

Max Vcore for C2D/C2Q´s = 1.55v, but only if your temps are ok, (under 72C load).

2. Yes. But be careful to not over volt your ram to much or you might end up frying it.

3. No.

Might consider a different cooler for the CPU Greymoon. I'm running basically the same system at 3.2 and have yet to break 56 degrees, even under stress testing.
