As terabyte capacity hard drives continue to roll out into the mainstream, we're doing our share to keep up with this exploding technology. Today, we're reviewing two more of these super-sized drives and will compare results with their fellow terabyte cousins.

The two drives we look at more closely today are old and new in the market space for terabyte hard drives. The Hitachi A7K1000 is built on the 7K1000 architecture, and represents one of the older families of terabyte drives. Hitachi uses five 200GB platters and ten heads in the A7K1000.

The other is a desktop drive from Samsung: the Spinpoint F series HD103UJ. Samsung's a relatively new player in the global storage market. Their past desktop drives have suffered from somewhat anemic performance, but have garnered a reputation for low noise and power usage. Samsung took aim at the performance issues by building the HD103UJ with just three platters and six heads for a whopping 334GB per platter.

The other five terabyte drives, which we've reviewed already, are as follows:

* Seagate 7200.11
* Seagate Barraduda ES.2
* Western Digital WD10EACS
* Western Digital WD1000FYPS
* Hitachi 7K1000

If you'd like to check out the earlier drives in-depth, check out our enterprise drive shootout where we compare the Western Digital WD1000FYPS and the Seagate Barracuda ES.2. Earlier we reviewed the Seagate 7200.11 and Western Digital GreenPower WD10EACS. And of course, we took a look at the first-to-market terabyte drive: the Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.

Now that there are more terabyte drives on the market today, we decided it was fit to re-evaluate some of these older drives from earlier reviews, in addition to reviewing these new recruits from Hitachi and Samsung.

Which terabyte drive is best for you? Before we dive into the performance numbers, let's examine these drives more in-depth.

woowoo, go Samsung F1 I've got one, and it is incredibly quiet; I can't hear it unless I try. And the con they put for it sounds like they really couldn't think of anything bad about it

I just bought two 750 GB F1's. Hopefully they pack all the performance of their large brother.
