X-Fi Elite + Z5500 + Optical = ?

Thread Starter
I just got my X-Fi Elite pro and I am running optical out of my Z5500's to the external X-Fi box. Now there isn't really a setting anywhere that I can find for using optical connections in the Creative software. I am getting sound, I'm just wondering if there is something I should set it to or if using analog is a better overall option.

Thanks.

Use your digital connection. You will need a toslink > IR interconnect to get digital sound. After you have it hooked up right click on your speaker icon and make your spdif out your default playback device. I go into the menu and put it on audio-creation mode so it is a clean signal with no x-fi effects. I let my amp do it's job. Your speakers will do the same. You should try it both ways to see what works best for your ears (entertainment, game, audio-creation).

Interesting analysis. I always thought digital sounded much cleaner and detailed with stronger bass lines...might just be me.

Try it both ways to see what works best for you. z5500 gives you options.

Optical is digital.

I'm pretty sure it's like this.
Cards like these X-fi's sound better plugged in as analog. That's what they are designed for. Optical link doesn't follow the same path through the amps and processing. The only reason to use optical is if your hooking them up to a home reciever or something.

I even though some times optical seldom has an issue of nto connecting with my on board sound, I find one cable preferable over 3 for surround sound, as a single cable is easier to manage. I also find digital to often be a better quality sound except when listening to low quality music

analog offers more with sound blasters. trust me i have ran digital on my xfi threwmy Z5500s and analog and i love analog more.

well i would say digital is way better, however i use both as for games you cant have 5.1 unless you use it.

Ok seems like it's 50/50 I suppose I'll try both.

The way I have it setup right now is a toslink running from my Z5500 Control the the Elite Pro external box. All I have to do is set it to digital/SPDIF, where do I do that exactly?
