Is this build any good?

Thread Starter
I've never built a computer before, what do you think of this build?

Intel Core 2 Duo e4500 cpu (oc'd as close to 3.0ghz as possible)
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 (it oc's well (supposedly) and runs Ubuntu Linux)
EVGA 8600GT (will oc the hell out of into GTS territory)
2GB Geil RAM DDR2 800
NZXT Hush case
The PSU is a donated PC Power & Cooling 470 ATX

Is this a decent build? I won't be running Windows but will game in Linux through WINE. I don't need to play on the highest settings, but I'd like to not have to upgrade my video card for a few years. I'm trying to build the PC as quiet as possible, and picking parts that will run relatively cool due to the case getting potentially hot.

Would getting an 8800GT require me to spend a lot more money by also getting a bigger PSU and also aftermarket CPU/GPU fans? Would I need these anyway with an OC'd e4500/8600GT?

Thank you for all your help

that video card isnt good at all if you game. there is now way it will trespass into GTS territory with a 128bit memory buss

he was talking about the 8600GTS if you were thinking 8800GTS....

This build will be fine for linux especially if you run the source games and whatnot.
Go for it.

Well the power supply and ram look good to me but the rest is all wrong.

I'd go with this.

Thank you all for the replies.
GFEAD, I did mean the 8600GTS
Mikemoon, the source games are OK, but I want to run some of the new games through WINE: Stalker, ET Quake Wars, Call of Duty etc, and some stuff that will come out in the future. I don't need to run them at high settings, I just want them to look good. Will the 8600 OC'd work?
Penicilyn, thanks for those links. Is the 9600 a better card than the 8800? (for the price) Will I need an AC Freezer 7 with the e2140 (OC'd high)? Why the Abit mobo over the Gigabyte? I've heard they're both pretty good, is the Abit better made, etc?

Thank you again for all the responses, this forum rules

Definitely bump up to the 9600GT, you won't regret it at all. It's not as good as the 8800GT, but it's probably the best price-performance card on the market right now, and should last for two years or more playing games at very reasonable settings. The 8600GT may be okay for right now, but in a year you'll be kicking yourself. It's money very well-spent if you jump up to the 9600GT. And the 9600GT is not all that much hotter than the 8600GT (especially if you overclock it), and will not require any special cooling.

I'd probably opt for the ABit IP35-E myself, the Gigabyte BIOS just isn't rich enough for my taste (although realistically speaking I'd prefer DFI, but that's neither here nor there).
