Their service could just be bad too.

what do you mean "reinstalled" it was moved from location to another location? cable uses snr and signal as well, perhaps these are low, you gonna need to get a tech to come and test everything

Well here's my local result....

and long distance...

As you can see Yes your ping times should go up but never as high as 200 even on cable. You can see on my connection I still stay well under 100ms ping times even over long distance. I'd try bypassing your router see if it gets better, if it doesn't call your ISP and start *****ing like noones business untill they get it fixed.

Ping quite simply is the amount of time it takes a single packet of data to leave your machine, reach its desitnation and return back to your machine.

A normal ping should be below 100ms in most case's unless your accessing oversea's servers where they communications lines between you and them are not the greatest.

Further more pings are in no way related to your connection speed i.e. going from a 10mbps connection to a 100mbps connection would have no effect on your ping times, only your download speeds.

Ping times in most cases will not effect normal net usage though if they are too high they can cause timeout issues where a server is essentially waiting too long for you data and in a sense finally forgets about you.

Ping times can greatly affect online game play, as if it takes data longer to go back and forth between you and the game server it can effect how quickly you see things, and how much delay between you doing something and the server and other players seeing you take that action. Hence for online game play you want to have the lowest ping as possible.

In most cases you will not see pings lower than say 15 to 20ms on a typical residential internet connection, however the norm is usually closer to 40 - 70ms depending on the distance your data is traveling and how good your ISP's backbone connections are.

Hope that helps a little.

One other thing to note is that satellite internet will always have extremely high pings due to the fact the signal has to travel out into space, bounce off a satellite back to the earth station, then get pumped into the backbone at the earth station. It's kinda of like calling San Diego from L.A. but patching the call through India, Japan, and Iraq along the way.

wow i should mention this to comcast, i do experience internet timeouts randomly. i should also be getting higher upload speeds with my current package.
