Which headphones? - Page 2

oh and also, for either one of those two headphones (HD555, A(D)700) they deserve a better soundcard to work with onboard aint going to cut it!

To be specific, I have the ATH-AD700s, but I spent alot of time thinking about it before my purchase, and settled on the ATHs because I use them mostly for gaming, I can tell you I have no problem telling where footsteps or gunshots are coming from in COD4. I really like mine.

Music sounds outstanding also.

Just a question, are you going to be using on-board sound with these?

For open headphones, the AD700s will own the HD555 without an amp. I'm not sure how much the HD555 improves with an amp though. The A700 will have a "different" sound. It's closed so the sound is not as airy and there is much more bass.

If you're driving it straight from your iPod, ATH is the way to go, man.

my hd555's from newegg are coming in today, i've got a little CMOY to test it out on with my ipod (still need to wait for my LOD to come in) and i'll let you know how it fares.

if you're picking up the HD555's they're $90 at newegg right now, only a few bucks more than the refurb ones linked earlier.

I have the ath-ad700's and they are great. Very clear sound and have worked well for everything(games/music/movies). I have the bass turned up on my sound card and a little in foobar for them. They have good bass but its not booming like closed headphones. I will recommend the ad700's to anyone. They are great headphones and they were only 100 bucks when I bought them on newegg..

I have the ATH AD700s and I love them. I've tried my friend's HD555s and my AD700s on my computer and I liked the AD700s more.

Reasons why I like them more...

1.) They were more comfortable. The ATH's don't put so much pressure on your head unlike the Senns.

2.) Sounded better in games and rock music

3.) They also had a softer more clear bass that was perfect.

*If you're going to be active while wearing these, the Senns may stay on your head better.

be aware the HD 555's are open backed, that means lots more sound leakage. the ath's have some leakage, but not as much as compared to the HD 555's.

This means if you're at a college campus, kids in the library will hear your metal.
My ath-a700's run fine without an amp from my ipod, but battery life has been cut about
a hour or two. I listen to bands like The Mars Volta and Everytime I Die and Scary Kids Scaring Kids [ those are just broad names so you can get the idea ] and they sound AMAZING on the ath-a700s'.

Grado's might be your choice though for rock, check out the SR-80's.
Grados tend to be the way to lean for rock.

well just giving them a go right now. note that i'm no audiophile so what i'm noticing isn't exactly the best described haha. also of note, is that these are right out of the box, with zero burn-in time.

testing involves using headphones behind a CMOY using OPA2227 opamp:
1) ipod using 256/kbps (or whatever the /** is) MP3 file format
2) cross-tested with an AIWA CD-player playing the same songs except from original CD

they're a marked improvement from the HD205's i currently use and the KSC75's i used to own (before they died in a little "mod" told me i suck at audio DIY lol)
they're definitely a different feel than the edgy supra-aural HD205's, the sound's got a lot more presence and a bit more depth.

the high-end is still a bit edgy compared to HD280's but they're alot more subdued than the HD205's which tended to feel like a cowbell from point-blanc sometimes, but it may change as it burns in. the mids are infinitely more clear than what i'm used to, i'm digging up parts in classical i simply wasn't aware of on my HD205's.
the bassy stuff is fine for me not overpowering like the HD280 can do but much more presence than on the HD205's. one thing i'm kind of noticing is that there's an odd, i want to say resonating but that doesn't quite feel right, quality i'm picking up with these but i can't really describe it. i'm not much on bass aside from experimenting or when i get into one of my Techno moods.

comfort-wise they're great. my huge ears and glasses have no issues at all with them on which is great.

the one thing i'm noticing is that I need to rerip everything to a lossless now... i need a new HD and my LOD needs to get here so i can give that another go without going through the ipod's output

edit---------------
and phospholipid's right. open, i can actually listen in on my TV as i listen. kinda funny.

mids- haven't learned to pick them out yet so no comment lol

Personally, I would like the more upfront sound of the Audio Technicas for metal - the "laid back" Senn sound signature just does not involve me enough.

I would take a serious look at the Alessandro MS-1. It's right around your price range, and takes the Grado SR-60/80 (I'm not sure which) and refines it quite a bit - though I've not had a chance to listen to them they would seem to be your ticket to metal bliss.
