An x1 card would not fit because the slot is way different. Not sure about x8, since I have not heard of anything that uses that, but I don't think you can.

Interesting you should say that about the PCIe x1, I am getting a new D-Link N wireless card and it is a PCIe x1, and the link I'm listing here says that it will fit in a x1, x4, x8, x16 slot. It says that in the middle of the page.

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=549

"Quote fom D-Link"
Fits any standard PCI Express slot – x1, x4, x8, or x16

Correct, A pci-e x1 card will fit in a pci-e x16 slot.
you can fit a 1x card on a 1x,2x,4x,8x and 16x slot... as you can fit a 4x on a 8x and 16x... as long as the slot has the same or more lanes than the card requires theres no problem..

Any pcie card lower than x16 can fit in a x16. I have an x8 Raid card in one of my x16 slots.
