Q6600: So where's the power?

Thread Starter
Everyone says that I won't really notice a difference - speed wise - with my Q6600 because I'm not running any video editing or such which takes advantage of the four cores. My question is - is there a way that I can see the power of the Q6600 on my system and what would I need to do in order to see it?

I'm asking this because after blowing my whole income tax on this new system I don't really notice a big difference from my old P4 2.4GHz system.

Thanks.

What kind of things do you do on your PC?

You'll notice a difference in some benchmarking tests and a few games, along with the encoding stuff. More and more software will be written to take advantage of 4 cores so you are ahead of the curve at least.

are you joking... my q6600 stomped my E6400 at the same clock and blew my northwood away. Anyway go rip some dvds (legal ones... i guess) and encode them with dvd shrink. It would take 7 mins with my e6400 and 2 with my quad both at 3ghz. And the e6400 had a higher bus speed

Well think of Traffic..Single core only has one way. vs Quad core is 4 ways of traffice....but then im drunk....Instead of every type of process being on a single core. You spread them out onto 4 core.....but then again I am also drunk.

Have you ran any benchmarks such as 3dmark06?

Ok ... so there really isn't any way I'm going to see the difference unless I encode a movie?

I do a lot of graphic design work with large programs like Photoshop and Illustrator running together. I also have other programs (SmartFTP, FontExpert, Acrobat, etc.) and browser windows open at the same time. For the most part I just do a lot of multi-tasking, having Firefox open and NoteTab, for instance.

Well, that's one good thing at least.

Normal stuff like internet you might not notice but benching and multi-treaded apps you will smoke a single/dual core CPU.

So what are some of these "multi-threaded" apps?
