DATA partition...not just C drive.

Thread Starter
so im sitting here at my parents house for march break, and i thought id tweak a few things on my dads computer to make it run a bit smoother and i noticed that he has a 250 gig hard drive, but his C drive is only 120 and the rest is in the DATA(D drive, which appears to be completely empty - other than maybe 100mb or so. prebuilt - specs are Aspire AST671-EP820A, pentium d 820, 1 gb ram, 250* gb sata hdd, vista.

this isnt of high concern, just curiousity. any thoughts?

Looks like he has a lot of extra space!

Too bad it's not a separate drive, you could probably "borrow" it from him without him knowing lol.

haha yeah i wish.

well it says none of it is shared or anything, so i dont even know what would be accessing the 104mb that occupies it, and i dont want to delete it and resize his C: drive just in case it is for something important and i, in his terms, "break" it lol. if i had it my way, he would have reformatted and reinstalled vista as soon as he bought it, but oh well.

Usually they do that for the restore CD (streamline the big stuff on the other partition to quicken up the install process) but when they do it's usually hidden. If it's just saying "data", it's probably ... for data.

If he needs the space, you can merge the D into the C with a simple proggie or Windows. (I never used teh built in Windows drive manager to merge partitions, I've always used Partition Magic 8.)
2 OP pls nerf

How complicated is merging partitions? Even I never tried to do it before. Is it kinda simple?

its easy. just use some utility and its pretty straight forward, delete the unecessary partition and then resize the one you want to use.

yeah the label on it is just DATA (D, but there is only 104mb of about 118gb or 120gb being used.
