Q6600 3.2Ghz Wall

Thread Starter
I currently swapped my E6600 for a Q6600 G0 revision. I've got the thing on a swiftech waterblock in its own 1/2" ID tubing loop but i cant seem to get this thing past 3.2ghz. I try to get to 3.33ghz and it'll fail Orthos with "hardware failure" and if i try 3.4 or higher it refuses to load windows... it'll POST but then restarted before windows try to load. I got 4-4-4-12 G.Skill HZ's and Crucial Ballistix but i loosened the timings to 5-5-5-15 2T and left the voltage AUTO (1.85V) i've tried to bump it up to 2.1V but still doesnt help. The bios vCore for 3.33ghz is 1.4V. I can get it to boot to windows at 3.4ghz but it'll auto restart as soon as i try to Orthos. I've disabled all the power saving functions. I'm just completely lost right now. I'm aiming for 3.4 or 3.6ghz if possible otherwise im better off swapping back to my E6600 which ran 3.4ghz and my RAM ran at 4-4-4-10 1T.

It's your motherboard and revision. The 680i had trouble overclocking quads.

well the Q6600 can handle 1.5V so if your temps are good try upping the voltage

Your revision should be ok, Murlocke and a few others discovered a FSB hole on the board. Ie; works @ 3.2Ghz or 3.6Ghz not between. Try 1600QDR.

My temps are 30-32C idle and appx 57-58C loaded @ 3.2ghz...
Losttol, i've searched the forums and been seeing that its the AR boards that are crap... The A1's with the bios update should be fine according to this forum.

i think its the board, i have the same problem. i cant get my setup past 3.2, i have tried everything. my q6600's running on the p35-ds3l boards do 3.4 - 3.6. so, i think its the board, i've been seriously considering replacing my 680i a1.

Yea i've noticed that strap. i've tried 1600 QDR but i cant pass Orthos. it gives me "hardware failure"

No, not true at all. The 680i A1 is the 2nd revision released by NVIDIA that corrected the GTL REF voltage to the quad core CPU. You can check out this thread for 680i overclocking

You are just hitting the FSB hole. What I mean by FSB hole is that at a certain FSB, no matter how much vcore I gave the CPU, it would not boot stable, or sometimes not at all. At 390+ FSB (up to 410) I could not boot with 1.55 vcore. But when I set FSB to 411 and up, I was able to boot and run OCCT for over 3 hrs stable. I eventually reached 1.4 vcore at 3.7GHz. I have also found that no two boards will necessarily have the same FSB Hole, and bios updates can even move them to different FSB frequencies.

Quote:
I discovered I had a FSB hole with my motherboard. I couldnt OC FSB from 395 - 408, but at 411 FSB I can run OCCT stable. Running 3.705GHz at 1.4v. My ambient right now is 26°C, my idle is 33/36° and load is 52/54°C.

Processor Model: E6600
CPU Clock Speed: 3705MHz
CPU Bus Speed: 411.67
CPU Multiplier Setting: x 9
CPU Core Model: Core 2 Duo
CPU week/stepping: L649G979
CPU Voltage: 1.4v (no vdroop)
Motherboard: EVGA 680i SLI A1
Memory: G.Skill CL4D6400-2GBPK 4-4-4-12 2T
Cooling: Swiftech Sys, Apogee GT & NB cooler

CPU: 1.425v
CPU FSB: 1.4v
RAM: 2.0v
SPP: 1.4v
MCP: Auto
MCP->SPP: Auto

SuperPI result (1M): 14.655s

CPU-Z Validation

This will help explain why there is a FSB Hole:

Duckieho posted this thread on the 680i strap which I will use to help illustrate the point. Basically what these are showing is that the northbridge chipset has latency much like your ram. When you move up in FSB, it will move to a different "strap" and loosen the timmings so to speak. The graphs show the "FSB hole" as well. Basically you take a huge hit in performance between 1376MHz up to 1454MHz, and above 480 FSB. I plan on running a 400 - 450 FSB.

How big is this stinking hole? i cant seem to get it to 3.6ghz either to run stable. I've read about the NB Strap and FSB hole thing before which is why i stopped at 3.4ghz with my E6600... I remember there was a calculator to tell you which FSB strap you were in too that someone created but i cant seem to find anymore.
