Question about my new Crucial Ballistix kit

Thread Starter
I saw the nifty little Ballistix Club thread.. and I'm sure there's lots of swell information in there.. but I'm not really fond of joining a forum and then sifting through a 77 page thread to find out that maybe my question's answer isn't even there. So, I'm sorry if this has been answered before.. but, alas, I'm lazy =P

I recently purchased the Crucial Ballistix Kit from The Egg.
If anyone's interested.. Model Number: BL2KIT12864AA804

Really great buy. All the way down to $35 if the MIR comes through. Anywho, the question I had was about them being double sided or not. I've heard a lot of different stories about the double sides not making the least bit of difference all the way to your **** is crap if you don't have chips on both sides.

First, I want to find out which is true. Do the chips on both sides matter? What difference does it make, if any?

The chips I received were only single sided.. and it looks like the heatsinks are just glued on. This kit used to be double sided and have pretty clips to hold on the heatsinks. I contacted Crucial and they said if I wanted, I could RMA the chips to them and they would exchange them for a set of double sided ones.

Is it worth the 8 bucks to ship them in order to get the double sided ones?

Thanks much.

If you have IC on both sides or 16 ICs there D9s which OC very well.
If you have 8, there the ones used on the 2x2G sets and don't OC as well.

The late D9s can do some impressive speeds, so if you expect to need the likes of 1100ish from a set of 800s, its worth the $8 IHMO!

Yeah.. mine only have 8 ICs.. the ones in the picture on NewEgg show the old ones with the clips on the heatsinks which must be the double sided ones. So, I suppose I'll probably send them off to get the better ones.

I don't really plan on overclocking.. but it's always nice to know that I won't have any trouble doing so if and when I choose to.

Thanks =)

Is there a performance difference other than you can OC better with the d9s?

The ICs on the single sided 2x1Gb kit, and the ICs on the 2x2Gb kits are the "Hockey" Micron D9NHL. They are D9s by name, but the are different then the previous D9 ICs like the D9GMH which are known to OC to 1200. The D9NHL ICs will not clock as high, but they are still able to reach 1149 if they are a good set. They will still do 1000 easily, and are EPP'ed for that at 5-5-5-18 just like the previous D9s.

Other then that, they both run great at 4-4-4-12 2T up to 900, the older ones might keep Cas4 up to 925, but the NHLs are still great memory kits.

Well if I send these back for the double sided kit with 16 ICs.. are those definitely going to be the D9 GMH set? Do the double sided ones come with any other series?

Also, I've seen a lot of people on NewEgg saying that their chips die out quickly after upping the voltage to 2.2 like the specs say they can get up to. Is this just a user fault in that they don't know what they're doing and break something.. or is this the fault of the new series chip with the NHL IC set?

I RMA'ed two sets of the single sided ones already. The first set lasted about 15 days and the second lasted 7 days. I'm getting my money back and have my OCZ's back in my RIG.

Unsure on the NHLs voltage... the previous D9s laugh at 2.2v, don't seem to care about 2.3 but beyond that your asking for it!

The double sided use the D9GMH ICs. So you can always call up Crucial and request an RMA for the double sided. The worst they will say is no.
