Question about my new Crucial Ballistix kit - Page 2

The D9NHL ICs will not clock as high, but they are still able to reach 1149 if they are a good set. They will still do 1000 easily, and are EPP'ed for that at 5-5-5-18 just like the previous D9s.

Other then that, they both run great at 4-4-4-12 2T up to 900, the older ones might keep Cas4 up to 925, but the NHLs are still great memory kits.
I just bought the new 2x2GB kit (4-4-4-12) and they are double sided. Haven't had a chance to OC them yet.

Ugh. So after a nice long chat with a Crucial rep.. I've acquired no information than what I already knew. Go figure.

I was trying to see about getting my RMA set up to send my chips off for the 16 chips modules. I was trying to explain to this woman that I wanted the 16 chip module with the D9GMH chips in them. She could not guarantee what chips I would receive, only that I would be sent "some sort of 16 chip solution"... double you tee eff?? She could not tell me what chips these modules would contain. I sent an email to Micron awhile ago.. maybe they'll be able to help me..

I'll ask here.. because you guys seem more knowledgeable than those idiots there.
Do all 16 chips modules come with the D9GMH chips? If not.. how can I check to make sure I still get the good stuff? Because from the sounds of it.. I can be sent a 16 chip module that still has the new D9NHL chips in them.. which would defeat the entire process..

thanks.

Hrmm.. anyone??

I emailed Micron and was contacted back by someone from Crucial. This is what I got

You should have received an email with an RMA number yesterday, for you to return the 8-chip modules you have in exchange for 16-chip modules. Your replacement order, containing two 16-chip modules, will ship out to you after we receive your return.

In reviewing the three online chat transcripts you had with our agents over the past several days, they appeared to give you correct information. We do not guarantee a specific type of chip (e.g. D9GMH) or a particular number of chips per module. Technology is always improving, so that more memory will fit into smaller spaces, which then means fewer chips are required for, say, a 1GB module. What used to require 16 chips now only requires 8 chips, etc. At Crucial, we currently have 16-chip modules in stock, and your replacement will provide you with 16-chip modules. However, we cannot guarantee that we'll have 16-chip modules in stock a year from now. However, the 8-chip and 16-chip modules are compatible with each other, as long as the memory types are the same (DDR to DDR, or DDR2 to DDR2, for example). Lower density chip manufacturing will eventually be phased out as higher density chip manufacturing ramps up, so eventually, 1GB 16-chip modules will no longer be made.
What should I make of this?

Looks like an answer to me, If your not overclocking or even pushing the performance what does it matter. IMO wait the 3 weeks till those single sided ones fail then ask for dual sided. My single sided Ballisticks didnt last more than 3 weeks. Ive had the new replacement ones for about a week now. They are double sided although they no longer use the clips on the top of the heatspreaders. If this set fails within the month im done with crucial for sure.

Are the double sided ones all manufactured with the GMH chips? How can you tell what chips you get on a particular module?

Peel off the heatsinks and see what's written on the IC's. This voids the warranty and I can almost promise you'll damage the RAM unless you've done this before.

See exhibit A.

I see.. so that's definitely not good.

No way to check without ripping them apart?

I recently got some Ballistix RAM PC6400, they're single sided, is this a real problem? Do you think they'd reach 1000MHz?
