the 2900xt could be softmodded easily to perform like a firegl, maybe same is the case with the 3870.

The lower price for 8800GT is $160 (amazon/PNY), G92 8800GTS is $220 (MSI/EGG) and HD3870 is $180. I would go for 8800GT SLI ,G92 8800GTS and then HD3870 CF.

SLI is out of the question as it does not support Dualview.

X48 is x16 by x16 by x4, which translates to x32 by x32 by x8 in PCI Express terms.

Actually, X48 may support more, but DFI only ships with x16 by x16 by x4. The x16's are directly connected to X48 while the x4 has to go through the south bridge!

NO. The X38/48 can have ONE of their PCI-E slots running at 32 lanes, or two of them at 16 each. It's a maximum of 32 lanes.

That is at PCI Express 2.0 bandwidth. PCI Express 2.0 is twice as fast as PCI Express. Therefore, PCI Express 2.0 8x is equivalent to PCI Express 1.1 16x.
