How would YOU resolve this situation? Advice Needed!

Hey guys,

I have a bit of a problem on my hands. I tore down my old system and sold a few of the parts. Everything went great until the person that bought my eVGA motherboard contacted me and said that it wasn't working properly.

It had been running just fine for months up to the minute I shut down to tear down the system. The first logical step was to ask what was wrong so I knew it wasn't something simple that was just overlooked. We've all mistakes afterall.

I got an e-mail back saying that the board was working perfectly and there was a "grounding issue" before. This took a considerable weight off my shoulders although I'm not sure specifically what the problem was.

A couple days later I am contacted and the board is was apparently completely dead. He said he was trying to set RAID on the BIOS and it never posted after that. I called eVGA with the error code and I found one of the potential causes was a "grounding issue". I asked him to be more specific and he told me that it's not uncommon for someone to forget to remove an unused standoff and cause a short in the board.

The buyer wanted a complete refund. If it were DOA then fine but it sounds a lot like it was working, was damaged, and stopped working. What would you guys do?

If you are up to it and are really nice MNiceGuy, I guess have him pay the shipping back and all the fees (plus your RMA shipping maybe?) you paid if it was on ebay and RMA it yourself and then sell the new board you get back.

Or just tell him that he broke it..... and to deal with it himself.

it was working to your knowledge when he bought it, and he even confirmed it was working.

then a couple of days later it's not working, so who knows what the guy did in those couple of days

Tough luck for him honestly

I think the thing was wrecked but then the little angel on my should reminded me of a time when I wasn't very knowledgeable, broke something, and was out of money. Looks like moral fiber wins big for this kid.

Since it sounds like the fault was the buyers, I would personally say, too bad so sad, your fault not mine.

But, if it was a friend, I would RMA it for them, or something...

I guess so...

BUT, on the other hand it seems as though it was his fault. It was working when you left, he confirmed it worked, so why the guilt.

Tough luck, not your problem.

Is the board registered with evga or whatever, I thought i read something along the lines of if it wasnt then maybe he could register it and get the rma himself ? maybe have him ship it to them , with confirmation save yourself sending it all over the place.

Definitely sounds like he screwed something up. Its a tough call. as far as paypal goes I guess its my recent experience that it can go anyway with disputes, I recently lost one. I was shocked . Anyway. Good luck with everything

Fully agree. A done deal is a done deal. This guy could have been overclocking and screwed it up.

Usually I would try to be the "better person" and help the kid out, but when he broke it and then demanded a full refund ..... **** him. If you have the email saved from him saying it worked fine and it was a grounding issue due to him not putting it together right, then you are not at fault and its not your problem. I would say help him if he was willing to meet you halfway. Demanding a full refund like that ... hell no.
