I'm back, help me out with a new build.

Thread Starter
Well, I've been gone for a while. I doubt anyone remembers me here, but I am once again employed, and next year I'll be a freshman at MIT, so I'm in need of a new rig.

Currently I'm running an Opteron 165 in a DFI NF4 mobo overclocked to 2.9GHz, with a GeForce 6800gs, 2gigs of G.SKILL HZ DDR500 RAM, a Big Typhoon with a silverstone on it, a Creative X-Treme Music card, and some fan controllers and hard drives and stuff.

Now, since I'll be going to college and all, I'll need a new rig. It'll have to be air cooled most likely, and it probably can't be as big and heavy as the Lian-Li case mine's currently in.

So, anyone want to toss me some suggestions, put maybe a $1000 cap on it?

I agree, I'd just upgrade to a 9600GT or an 8800GT (although I'd get the 512MB version not the 256MB. The video card on your current rig is the only thing that needs some improvement.

If you do decide for a completely new rig, I'd definitely go Intel as any AMD rig would be nearly a lateral step for you. Also, you can probably get a few hundred $ for your current system.

Here's what I'd do with $1000 and the intent to overclock:
$240 - Q6600 OEM
$140 - DFI LANPARTY DK P35-T2RS
$190 - MSI 8800GT 512MB (after $30 MIR)
$65 - Corsair 550VX (after $20 MIR)
$32 - 2x1GB Crucial Ballistix PC2 6400 (after $35 MIR)
$80 - SG 320GB HDD
$80 - Antec Nine Hundred (after $40 MIR)
$45 - Tuniq Tower
$26 - DVD Burner
$6 - AS5 Thermal Grease

$904 Total after $125 in MIR and before S&H (about $30)

EDIT: For another $20-30 you could upgrade the video card to an 8800GTS (G92) 512MB.

I agree with everything but the mobo choice for a quad. I would go with the DFI LANPARTY DK P35-T2RS it is designed with quad oc'ing in mind.

Out of curiosity, what makes the DFI better for overclocking quads?
