E2180 help, overclocking multiplier - RAM - Page 2

That would be my suggestion DeRock, go with the G.Skill DDR2-800. I've got two sets of those $45 pairs and I love them. Will do DDR2-900 with a slight bump in voltages too As far as getting to 3.2ghz on a new E2180, you're going to need to give the chip at least 1.35-1.40 @ vcore. My older batch chip (Oct2007) does 3.0ghz on stock vcore, but takes 1.32 to get to 3.2. It gets a little warm for my tastes when I increase voltages, 54-56ºC on a Zalman 9500LED. I know that I could push more, but I want to keep this CPU for ALONG time (3-5yrs), so I keep temps way down. Anyways, the Tuniq Tower or TRUE CPU coolers would be your best bet, IMHO!

1) If you don't already have the E2180, then go with the E2140. It will still do 3.2ghz with ease and i've pushed mine to 3557mhz

2) DDR2 800 is really cheap lately. I would say for someone to post a link to some Micron D9's just for their insane overclocking ability (i'm pretty sure they are at tank guys in the 667 section, but they will do 1100mhz+ pretty commonly)

3) the Gigabyte DS3L is nice, but it has a FSB wall around the mid 400's, which was a big disappointment for me. Go with the DFI P35 bloodiron. It's about $120 and will overclock very nicely

rsfkevski- super advice, exactly what i was looking for, and its even better that you HAVE it so you have probably done what im asking.

johonm333 - does the 2140 have an unlocked multiplier? I like the unlocked multi on the 2180 because i was planning on getting an even 400 FSB so i can have a 1:1. Thats also why i chose the Gigabyte board because i wasnt planning on hitting that 435ish FSB wall.

Ah i see. the E2140 has a 6-8 multi, so i usually run it at 425x8 (3.4ghz). I don't see 850mhz on ram being very demanding.

its all up to you though
