Laptop Heat problems

Thread Starter
Ok I have a Compaq V2140US and its a HUGE POS and always has been, but now it shuts down all the time from overheating. I think processor fan is broken because it never turns on. I idle around 66 degrees Celcius while on battery, but when I use the power chord my idle temp goes up to 71 degrees... Anyways is there anywhere to buy a fan that might fit in my laptop and work, or am I just ****-out-of-luck? Do any cooling pads work on the laptop battery, or do they all have to be plugged into an outlet?

running at 77 degrees right now just browsing the internet.... and I'm not even clicking through pages quickly. I did notice that my laptop fan actually is running, I guess it's just really weak... I'm ganna open it up sometime this week and see if dust is clogging it up in there or something. Any other suggestions would be great.

both are what I have - referring to black 3-fan stands

they are so effective on my laptop that the laptop's fan never turns on... and it runs on USB power

It could help you a bit

edit: I have to shift my laptop around such that the CPU Fan intake is right over the fan - but its not a big deal since it still sits very stable

you can also prolong the life of the fan ,once you have it apart. You peel the round sticker off the back of the fan and take a q-tip with a little oil on it and dab a little oil(wd40, gun oil)where the round shaft is ,now put the sticker back on and your set to go. If your fan doesn't have the sticker on the back ,you can pull the fan out of the laptop and spray gun oil or wd40 inside where the shaft is. Let the oil penatrate ,now take a can of air and blow oil out to keep the little circuit board dry so your fan dosen't short out once you fire it back up

For my wife's laptop I used some card board and bottle caps to elevate it some(yea pretty ghetto I know).
And yes the fan does get quite dusty/dirty especially if you have pets.
I would recommend at least elevate the laptop some and blow off the fan/heatsink fins (the area where the hot air is forced out)
