They tried that in the Matrix, and look how that ended...

Personally I would like to see AI for less complex animals, then I could do Gladiator Mice without PETA menstruating all over me.

why do people have to post so many of these threads on AI? it's already scary enough to think about it, so why torment me more?!

First off, Jane from the Ender series. Enough said. But still;

You guys get so worked up about AI as if it's going to kill us all IMMEDIATELY after initialization. But if you really think hard, there's just not a way for that to happen. First, if we built it, we could control it, first and foremost. You create something and build the very properties by which it canalizes its thoughts, you can also make it never able to turn on you. Say it ever gets a certain "thought" in its mind, you can have it fry itself if a pattern/thought is ever formed. It can never communicate or carry out its mankind-genocide thought process because it's dead.

Secondly, IF that ever did happen, you get an EMT a mile above the Earth's, and even a moderately powerful one will knock out everything from car radios to IBM's Blue Gene, end of story. They couldn't build protective cloaks and communicate "activate cloak now! EMT initiallized by humans!" because their waves would travel the same speed as the EMT burst. They all die.

Third of all, there's no way to travel at the speed of light because no material can withstand it. The expansion and contraction are remarkable at those speeds. We're talking about time and space dilation and cessation. So we won't be getting alien technology, ever, unless it drifts to us through space very slowly.

Lastly, if something is truly sentient, it won't create genocide. True sentient nature is capable of devastating things, like the holocaust, but sentient nature is also intrinsically empathetic. A species wouldn't be able to sustain itself if it wanted to kill everything--think what would happen if lions could use rifles...there would be only one lion eventually. You think of any situation that starts with genocide, and a truly sentient creature (if there are enough of them to form differing unique opinions and personalities, TRUE AI) will not be able to finish the task because others will stop it. Wrong and right also come with sentience, not just kill kill kill.

I say BRING IT ON! I want a hot bionic babe who knows 8000 recipes and the only foreplay is a monthly battery pack change. Weird Science anyone? You're forgetting there is also awesome AI sci fi out there too... (Jane from Ender series again)
