Preparing For A 3870x2..

Thread Starter
Planning to sell my current GPU on (HIS 2900XT 1GB DDR4) to help fund the ASUS 3870x2 1GB....If i could afford it, i'd keep my 2900 and run it in crossfire mode. but meh, money is hard to come by .

When the 3870x2 was released i tried my best to resist buying it but ive heard so many good things...are they true?. ive read it achieving high scores in 3dmark 06 and doing great in titles such as Crysis..

I assume the Dtek GPU waterblock wont fit on the 3870x2 as its two cores?. not that i mind - i recently decided to scrap watercooling GPU's as my CPU temps are high (i run both in same loop) which is, i'm certain, largely because of the GPU which is in the loop. overclocking the CPU is my main priority.
Is the stock air cooler on the 3870x2 just as noisy as the one on the 2900xt 1gb?. and would it allow me to overclock the 3870x2 while sustaining good temps?.

Should be able to order the new GPU on wednesday, and, hopefully, should recieve it by friday at the latest. I'll post images once i get my mitts on it and a camera .

I aint been this excited for some time, i just hope i'm not setting myself up to be disappointed.

The 3870X2 has a lot of potential, but ATI keeps bringing out crappy drivers and is difficult to OC with visra 64 bit. Sure, you can use AMDGPU, but whatever changes you make using it, really doesn't improve 3dmark06 scores. I have been stuck on 18K, and can't get past it.

Others may have had a better experience of OCing it. The fan is bloody loud when run>60%.

not exacly, HD 3870x2 is dominating most games, you can play call of Duty 4 1920 by 1200 with 2x ADSS AA and x16 af and get an average of 60 frames at max settings. Its just that Nvidia likes to screw with ATi making crossfire scaling terrible at their sponsored and optmized games like Crysis and Company of Heroes. By the time the drivers are ready, a new generation of cards is released, pity aTI, they should make some more titles.

If I had more ambition, I would pull it out of my system and sleep next to my 3870x2 every night. I had some initial problems but I am very happy with it these days. Congratulations on the new card!
