Nooby Doo needs a nooby snack...

Here's where I'm at:

Q6600
4gb Crucial Ballistix tracer (rated for 1066 @ 5-5-5-15)
Zalman CNPS9500
MSI 8800GT OC (lol)
RocketFish 700W
Lian Li PC-75B

Okay, so I got it all up and running at stock, and set my voltages for FSB at 1.3, SPP/NP at 1.4, MCP at 1.525, and HT at 1.25, with 2.2v for the Crucial based on their spec. These voltages are from the 780i forum recommends. After some playing, I got the following setup to "work":

QDR 1600
CPU mult 9 for clock speed 3.6 Ghz
Link/sync 800 (set timings on optimal for now, 5-7-7-24)
CPU volt set to 1.475, HWMonitor tells me it's 1.39 under load

Long story short, it crashed under Prime95, but runs stable (Prime95 overnight ~10 hours with no crashes) after I loosened the timings to 6-6-6-18. The CPU idles at 43C based on Coretemp 0.97 and HWmonitor, and got up to 59C under load, but hovers at ~56 - 57 when I came in this morning.

A couple questions.

Are these CPU temps "safe"? I know it's a stupid question for overclocking, but 57C under full load with this stable overclock seems pretty solid to me. I'm a writer/doctoral student, so stability is important to me as I use my computer 24/7 for everything, especially a lot of usenet binaries, etc.

The setup runs stable with 1.475 as my CPU voltage in BIOS, and HWmonitor tells me it's 1.42 actual, and droops to 1.39 under load. Yay? Nay? I think I can drop this to 1.45, which I'll try after posting this...

Also, my RAM situation is the most frustrating. I'm rated for running at 1066, and I'd prefer to set my RAM to a link/3:2 to run at a 1066 clock. When I try this though, I can't even boot into Vista64. I tried upping CPU voltage to 1.5 in BIOS (the maximum "safe" range in BIOS and based in Intel specs I've read so far - if this is wrong, please tell me!), but that didn't help, so I dropped it back down to 1.475. Do I need to loosen the timings further? Up the RAM voltage? Head up ass syndrome?

3.6Ghz with a RAM speed of 1066, stable under Prime95 for 12 hours, with a max CPU temp of 60 under load is my ultimate goal. Is this realistic/problematic? Can you help me get there?

Thanks ALL!!! I feel like this is the right place to be...

Over all Id say everything looks about normal and pretty good on the temps my load temps are 55 to 58 on 3.2ghz, with a 1.37v. Why cant you run your ram at 1:1 and try that?

I don't know. Why can't I? I'm diving back into the BIOS now, I'll give that a whirl. I haven't tried so far, since it puts the RAM at something ridiculous like 1350 mhz.

Will let you know.

Thanks for fast reply!

Lower it to like 900 or what ever is underclocked it will run it at 1:1 because you will still be over clocking it over the clocked speed

Now I'm dismayed. Reading around, I see that some other folks are getting 4-4-4-12 timings with 1100 and 2.3 volts. While I'm not that ambitious, why am I only stable at 6-6-6-18 800? Running memtest now, but feel there is much to learn...

Okay, I set myself up with the 6600 at 3.4 ghz, unlinked the RAM, and set it to 1080Mhz (why not?), on a 5-5-5-15 timing. Vcore at 1.475, with 1.42 idle actual, and 1.39 - 1.4 under load. Prime95 runs at 57C blended, and ~66C under little RAM torture test. OCed the video card to 700Mhz core, and 2010Mhz memory.

This seems to get me the best of everything in a stable build for everyday use. I am going to leave it Prime95ing overnight again, and if it checks out, these will be my official specs. 3dMark06 benchmarks to follow. Any advice in the meantime is much appreciated.

I will experiment with 3.6Ghz more over the weekend...
