First Case Mod - Revamped Monarch

Thread Starter
NOTE:
For now the pictures are extremely horrid. I'm using a cell phone, but should have a better camera by next month.

Over the weekend, my cousin brought over a big box of parts from his old Monarch Hornet that he wanted to get rid of.

It's just been lying in his house for about 4-5 months collecting dust.
I think that it is a pretty good case to just leave unused. This will be my first case mod and may also become my senior project as well.

Here we go!

Gotta have the tools!

- 3/16/08 -

I started working on it yesterday, removing everything from inside of the case.
Here's how it looked when I first pulled it out of the box.

I spent about an hour or so removing all that I could which caused my room to become a giant mess.

Here is what it looks like currently.

So far I've got a couple of ideas for this case. Any suggestions or new ideas are certainly welcome and appreciated.
Right now I'm thinking about spray painting the inside neon green and putting either a single white cathode or dual white cathodes to brighten up the inside so the neon paint will be shown. The case came with a 4" blue sound cathode so that will be going in as well.

Please, if anyone has any ideas, share them with me.
I've got an airbrush so if anyone has any nice ideas for some stencils I could make... bring on the ideas!

I didn't get all that much done today and I actually ran into a slight problem which has spurred some questions.

The only thing I really accomplished today was cleaning off the motherboard tray and getting rid of the cable ties from previous cable management.

I decided to take off the CPU cooler to 1) Clean it. Dirt is all over that thing. and 2) To see what CPU my cousin had. (I tried asking him, he doesn't remember. All he knows is that it's a P4)
In the process of taking the cooler off, the CPU was actually ripped off with it.

I thoroughly checked it and there are no broken pins but this thing hasn't been turned on in quite a while and the CPU is literally cemented onto the cooler with it's thermal paste.
Are there any tricks I can do to get it off?
I've heard of using a hairdryer or leaving it out in the sun.
Which do you suggest?

Once I get it off, I have two options.

First of all,
here is the motherboard's specs:
http://www.superwarehouse.com/ASUS_P...00-VM/p/341708
As you see, it's pretty old but I'm not looking to upgrade it at this time.

Socket Type: Socket 478
CPUs Supported: Intel Pentium 4, Intel Celeron
FSB: 400/533/800 MHz

I was looking at this CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.0E Prescott 3.0GHz
but according to ASUS, it will not work until I update the mobo to the latest BIOS.

So theoretically, I would be able to use the old CPU, boot the system, update BIOS, shut down, put in the new CPU and all would be fine, correct?

My second option is to just keep the old CPU, but at this moment I have no clue what the CPU actually is so I am unsure of it's quality.

Either way, I need to get that darn CPU off of the cooler.
Any tips?

This will also be going in at a later date: 7600GT AGP8x

If you have a loose razor blade, try that.

As for the motherboard, it's fine. I even believe it'll overclock a good deal - but not as much as its P4P800 counterpart

Don't leave it out in the sun - it can overheat easily in that!

Honestly I would not invest in another CPU for that system. I would save up a little more and buy a new intel or amd board. For 79 bucks you can get a nice AMD CPU and if you save enough for an AM2+ board you can update to a quad later.

GonX,
Exactly why I was hesitant to try either of those methods of unsticking the CPU.
I will try your razor blade idea.

Kenny,
One thing I forgot to mention, this rig is not going to be mine, it is being "beautified" for a girlfriend who at the moment has an utterly awful computer as well as a senior project so I can go ahead and get that out of the way.
She plays games such as Oblivion and Sims 2 so I am trying to build it based around that idea.
We will, of course, be looking to upgrade it further in the future, but for now I just want to get something that will allow her to play those games without spending too much money.

However, if you really think it is wasteful for me to go this route, maybe something like this would be a better investment?

Just a little update while I'm at school.
I've decided to go the route of getting a new motherboard.
It will be easier in the long run and will allow me to use a much wider variety of CPU's and allow for easy upgrades in the future.
Plus that would illuminate my stuck CPU problem.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good mobo?

Besides that, I am going to start the painting process today!

I'm getting the primer, non-conductive neon green paint, and clear coat paint.

I will be applying primer to the inside piece and mobo tray today.
I've heard it is recommended to wait 24 hours after applying the primer before you start painting. Any other tips?

Updates!

I got the paint today and went ahead and applied the primer to the motherboard tray.

Looks pretty good right now for primer.
I'll be applying the green paint tomorrow if it doesn't rain, but if it does then I'll have to wait until Thursday.

I've decided to go a different route with this project and upgrade it to be future proof.

Here are the parts I have selected thus far:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz
GIGABYTE GA-G31M-S2L LGA 775
G.SKILL 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
XFX PVT84JUDD3 GeForce 8600GT 256MB

How does it look so far?
