Graphics Cards Upside-Down

Thread Starter
Why do graphics cards always mount with the underside facing up?

This may be a silly question, and I can think of a couple reasons, but none that really satisfy me. Facing the fan/heatsink down keeps them away from most of the rest of the heat generating components on most motherboards (good), that also means they intake cooler air (good), but heat rises into the card (bad), and I have to look at the plain jane underside rather than the fan/heatsink/decals (bad). I understand that the location of the graphics card slots in relation to the card slot openings on the case could be an issue but that just seems like another cop-out to me.

It's because of how the sockets are on the motherboard.

By the way they do make cases where the motherboard is backwards and the GPU is right-side-up.

How does that work? I just can't picture how you could get the card facing up unless the board is mounted on the left side of the case in addition to being upside down. And doesn't that also put the cpu at the bottom of the case?

I don't mean to sound like a dolt, but 180 degrees on which axis? Both?

Man, spacial relations is definitely not my strong suit.

Doesn't this seem much better? Not only for the upside-down graphics-card-thing, but general airflow too?

Also, would it kill graphics card manufacturers to slap a decal on the side I stare at all day? And what about cards that use two slots? Wouldn't it be pretty darned easy to use the lower slot and put the fan/heatsink on the top?

Exactly. If it has a window, its on the other side, and all access is on the other side, its just in reverse. I think its a rather better design. of course, i have a more expensive case than most of them, and could have gotten one, but i wanted the massivness.
