Intel outlined plans to produce six-core chips in the fourth quarter. The move is that latest salvo in a game to out-core AMD on everything. AMD finally gets its quad-core chip out the door and Intel moves to six. The future looks like this: Four cores, six cores, eight cores, 10 cores, 12 cores. Oh my. Who wouldn’t want all those cores?

Yea I'm a gamer and I know we don't need more cores, but seriously. How many of you have computers with much more than you'd ever need?
It's just an addiction for us. We gotta have it even if we don't need it.

This might be great for servers but not for us gamers.
It doesn't matter. Intel is a company. They make products in order to sell them, and will only improve if it allows for more sales. Like with clock speed, your average person is going to think more cores is better.

At this time only a handful of games can take true advantage of a quad core processor.

Where-as I can take full advantage of such a processor while working with my usual fifteen trillion windows all open while listening to music and trying to get some flash gaming in all at the same time.

Gaming isn't what drives the industry and I'm rather glad for it as the gaming industry moves slower than a snail on a salt lick.

All games using the unreal engine 3 have at least quad core support (possibly more), and UT3 shows a significant performance boost with c2q vs c2d both at the same speed.

Amd should say screw the 6-core and move straight to the 8-core to be ahead of intel

<--- core whore

all the more to fold with!!!

Are all of intel's new processors going to be 45nm?

I am a little gun shy of the 45nm procs right now, with the voltage problems they are having.

There are no voltage problems. The "problem" is that the 45nm procs can't take as much as the 65nm procs, which makes sense because stock voltage is lower. If you were to run an Athlon at a voltage that the wolfdales are dying at (in terms of percentage increase), the Athlon would be running at 1.6V - that was never advised.

Yeah, all gonna be 45nm. 32nm next year; if not, then the year after.

I don't think it is an addiction. You are either getting better or you are getting worse, you NEVER stay the same.

Everytime I have purchased a PC I have said this same thing to myself only to see my parts outdated in 6 months or sooner. Don't forget we were just two years ago we were buying single core CPU's.
