[NewScientist]TVs reinforced for those smashing Wii games

"Wii have a problem but we have a solution," jokes the Panasonic engineer. The problem is that gamers using the Nintendo Wii are smashing plasma TV screens if the remote slips from their grasp mid-game. The company's answer is to reinforce the screens by applying old-style TV tube-making technology.

Old-fashioned cathode-ray tubes contain a vacuum, so they have to be made from a thick toughened glass to ensure they don't implode. Modern plasma and LCD screens have only a thin glass faceplate because although the cells inside the screen have to be protected from the air, they do not need a vacuum. So gamers using the motion-sensitive Wii remote to play tennis or golf games can crack the screen and ruin an expensive TV if they lose their grip.

To make its TV sets less vulnerable, Panasonic is planning to use high-strength CRT glass across its range of flat-screen TVs. In a demonstration for New Scientist at a seminar in Valencia, Spain, Panasonic hung a 250-gram steel ball on the end of a cord and let it swing 40 centimetres onto a screen to simulate an impact equivalent to the Wii remote being thrown hard at the screen from across a room.

Even after a wince-inducing 1000 strikes on the same spot, the glass remained intact and unmarked. By contrast, a conventional flat screen cracked after a single strike, exposing its electronic innards to the atmosphere and stopping it working.

The idea will be useful beyond Wii users. "Even if people don't have a Wii, children throw TV remotes at screens," says Michael Price of Panasonic.
Sigh...

You'd have a broken TV most likely, and a kid that needs to learn the value of certain items.

~~~ ON_TOPIC ~~~
Well, this is surely a good deal easier than my idea of getting some plexi as a front mount.
Can't they just add a little leash to put around your wrist on the remote?
Stupid thing is they do have them for the Wii.
And if you broke your screen and wasn't using the 'leash' then under the terms of any extended warranty/in-warranty contract, you wouldn't be covered
Now this is practical R&D. I don't have the wii, but as you all have said, children WILL abuse your TV. My daughter, 2, has to be reminded that when Scar (Lion King) or Hopper (Bug's Life), or any other freakin Disney antagonist that she's watching does something bad, we are not allowed to go to the TV and smack them, or throw toys at them, or hit them with a remote........good thing she likes to be read to more than watching tv.
Durable electronics ftw!
My TV has a scratch that is usually invisible, but sometimes you can see its colorfulness. Right after I got this screen, my little brother climbed my desk and pushed something over... and that something scratched my screen on its way down.
I like durable stuff. Especially households with children will appreciate this, because i promise you that at some point something is going to be hurled at that TV.
