DRAM:FSB ratio - Page 2

memory timings are often reported like this:
4-4-4-12

Sometimes they're expanded a bit such as this:
4-4-4-12-26-2T

It corresponds (in order) to:
CAS-tRCD-tRP-tRAS-tRC-command rate

Those are the most common timings. I'm very new to Intel, and tRD isn't one used much by AMD users, so these guys will have to explain it's significance.

I mean to set your bios ram default to 667/333 not 533/266 or 800/400
this will force your ram to be 1:1 when its 755/2 = FSB @3400/9
and allow you to tighten timings.

To run 1:1, take your FSB and double it, that's what frequency your RAM should be running at. For example my quad is running at 378mhz (*9), so my ram is running 1:1 at 756mhz, right now at 4-4-4-10 at 2.1V

tRD is the delay for the clock crossing procedure from the memory clock domain to the FSB clock domain, which is always there, even on a 1:1 ratio, on intel chipsets.

It is essentially how much time it takes data to travel through the northbridge. Lower is faster, but is more strenuous and requires faster memory settings (for example I can run tRD of 5 at 1:1/ddr800 if I use a CAS of 3 or at 2:3/DDR1200 with a CAS of 5).

Yeah, i understood that, i just wondered whether it should always be 1:1 for optimal performance, or whether you could change RAM speed, and thus the ratio for better speed.

Did some testing, results below. All tests were run on my E2140 @ 400x8. The only differences are the ones shown. tRD was kept at 5 (the lowest possible at each setting). Generally the settings are the absolute fastest ones that remain 100% stable with the memory I am using.



E2140 @ 3.2GHz, 400x8, 1:1 ratio, DDR800, 3-3-3-9-T2









E2140 @ 3.2GHz, 400x8, 2:3 ratio, DDR1200, 5-5-4-14-T2







Clearly, a 1:1 ratio has absolutely no performance advantage.

I should probably revise my statement and say that 1:1 can have performance advantages on certain NVIDIA chipsets, at least compaired to only slightly higher memory speeds or ratios. The tRD/clock crossing procedure works a bit bifferently on them.

Where as any improvement in memory speed, keeping timings and FSB the same will improve performance (however slightly) on an Intel chipset, keeping a 1:1 ratio may indeed be better than, say, a 25-50MHz boost in memory speeds at the same timings on an NVIDIA 680/780/790i. Still, from what I can gather, even on NVIDIA chipsets, much higher memory than FSB speeds will still improve performance, even with looser timings, all other things being equal.
