Already a very popular game across all formats, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is about to get a makeover for the Xbox 360. April will see the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Game of the Year edition in what is looking like an exclusive for Microsoft’s console.
The re-released game will not appeal to gamers who have already purchased the title as the main edition is a download token for a map pack developer Infinity Ward is preparing. The pack is called the “Variety Map Pack” and contains the maps Creek, Broadhouse, Killhouse and Chinatown. The other slight difference is a new front cover for the game.
Existing owners will be able to buy the Variety Map Pack for 800 points (US$10) when it is released. That means players who have yet to purchase the game may end up saving a bit of money by waiting for the GotY edition to hit the shelves.
Personally I think a game re-release carrying the GotY tag needs a little bit more than a map pack token to warrant its price. Possibly an art book and additional single-player content along with downloadable content would make it a worthy purchase. We also have to remember Call of Duty 4 was originally released with a Collector’s Edition SKU. That has a “Making Of” bonus DVD and a hardcover art book. Why isn’t this in the GotY edition?
I’m hoping more content details appear before the re-release to help sweeten the deal. I also hope the PC and PS3 formats get the same treatment.
