About to buy GX2 Need some help!

Thread Starter
I'm on the verge of buying the GX2 I just need 3 simple questions answered before I push the button

1.) Does the card fit into an Antec 900 with one Hard drive without having to cut up the case?

2.) Will it work well on my 650i mobo? i.e no PCI-E 2.0 slot, will it harm performance?

3.) I am buying a new PSU to feed this monster, will both the Silverstone DA850 and the Enermax Galaxy 1KW fit in the Antec 900 and will both power the GX2? Also which is considered to be better and why?

Thanks to all who can answer all/any of the above questions, everyone who responds with a useful answer will get +Rep!

Note: please do not turn this into a discussion thread about the GX2, I have my heart set on owning it and will not consider any other card.

1) Not sure. Will most likely fit, its smaller than a 8800GTX.

2) I doubt PCI-E 1.0 will harm the performance much but your next upgrade should be the motherboard.

3) Not sure. They are both huge PSUs if I remember right and you won't need NEAR 900 or 1000W. Thats insane overkill unless your planning to grab another 9800GX2 later on.

750W would be plenty for you.

1. Yes. It fits.
2. It will work with 650i. Not much.
3. A good 650W PSU is fine. DA850 is prefect.
Get the Da850 over the Galaxy.

Enjoy your new card and post your feedback once you get it.

Wow, stunningly fast responses!

+rep for all

Going to go and order it right now!!!

Thanks again!

lol I appreciate my motherboard is getting old now but I just can't afford a new mobo and the GX2 at the same time and I want the performance increase now from my ageing GTS 640mb. Also I would probs have to buy a new OS and not quite ready for Vista just yet and pointless getting another XP. I am trying to make this mobo last until Nehalem is out so I can do a CPU + mobo upgrade then.

1. Yes
2. Performances losses will be little to none.
3. Yes those PSUs will fit and any supply that is around 650 watts or greater will be fine for just one GX2. If you plan on going SLI with the GX2 in the future you will probably want 1000 watts or more.

I was dead set on buying the 9800 GX2 also, but after seeing some of the recent benches I am going to pass.

The 9800 Gx2 can barley run Crysis at max settings. (not even sure if it can handle all the AA) Why buy a card that already falls behind some of the new nextgen gaming standards.

I would personally go with 2 8800 gt 512 mb. Two of those in SLI overclocked will out perform the 9800 GX2. , and if you buy one now, and wait to buy another in 1 month of 2, you can use the evga step-up program to buy a REAL next gen card such as the G200 supposedly coming out in August (and you will already have 250$ towards it)

Price to performance ratio is something that consumers always need to research, look at some of the recent benchies....9800 GX2 = 650$
8800 GT 512 MB = 250$ x 2 = 500$

Even if you are dead set on the 9800GX2 because of the quad sli....the powerconsumption is going to be ridiculous and expensive. You will need at least a 1k PSU and your electic bill will suffer the wrath of the beast. Not to mention the HEAT alone will cause your system's temp to raise ENORMOUSLY. Overclocking becomes less efficient, your system is not as stable, and your room temperature will even become a couple degress warmer just because of this card alone!. Each of these cards are going to be cooking at least around 80c is my guess.

Just because Nvidia is putting a fat price tag on this card and calling it their "Flagship" doesnt mean that it actually a good buy, believe me the next series of nvidia cards will be what the 9 series never was. An actual nextgen improvement. Not a revision of old technology. Make nvidia pay for releasing these POS cards that were supposed to revolutionize gaming. The only thing these cards will do is put a smile on Nvidia's face if enough people do fall pray to them.

How do you overclock the 9800 GX2, is Rivatuner sufficient to overclock both cores?
